HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 19701117 eaa~ '~ PacE 3~i MINUTES OF THE ORANQE COUNTY HOARD OF COMMISSIONERS November 17, 1970 The Board of Commissioners of Orange County met in adjourned session at 8 o~aloak P.M. on Tuesday, November 17, 1970, in the Cotmnisaioners Room at the Courthouse in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Members Present: Commissioner Henry S, Walker, William C. Ray, Hareey D. Bennett and Ira $. Ward. Members Absent: Chairman Carl M. Smith. Commissioner Henry Walker assumed the Chairmanship oP the meeting sa Vice-Chairman of the Board. The following persona ware present: Dr: Roy Lindahl, Mr. Roy Deal, Robert Peak, Bill Britt, Fred Cates, Virgil Wilkins and Roger Foushae. This meeting was called for the purpose of discussing the feasibility of calling an election on the Local Option Sales Tax aaeation. Vice Chairman Walker requested that the representatives of the various agenaiea oP gevernment express their opinion to said matter. Dr. Lindahl, representing the Chapel Hill 3choel Board, stated that the School Beard did support the propaaed election as the Board felt it would provide significant money for new school programs. Mr, Deal, representing the County Board of 8ducatiAn, stated that his Board had not recently disauaeed the matter, but that he Pelt they would support the calling of the election. Mr. Peck, Manager of the Town of Chapel Hill, stated that the Chapel Hill Board of Aldermen had voted to support the Local Option Sales Tax election. Mr. Britt, Manager of the Town of Carrboro, stated that the Carrborv Town Board of Aldermen did support the proposed calling of an eleatioa. Fred Cates, Mayor :of .the:Tvwn of Hillabarvugh, stated that he supported s Local Salsa Tax Election-; but he had not discussed t}ie matter with his Board. Mr, Wilkins, Manager of the Town of Mebane, stated that he had not recently diaausaed the matter of a Local Option Salsa Tax with the Mebane Board of Aldermen and that he was not i.n the position to make any statement relative to the opinions of the Board members. Mr. Foushae stated that he wsa present sa an interested citizen and that he Pelt he could support the proposed election. Disauesion ensued and it was reconmiended that the County call a Local Option Salsa Tax Election sometime between the dates of February l5, 1971 and March 1, 1971.
