Re: Upcoming Board of Health Vaca cy
Date: September 2, 2008 .
The Orange County Board of Health at their regular meeting on
August 28, 2008 considered the vacancy on the Board of Health
created when Dr. Sharon Van Horn completed her second term of
service on June 30, 2008 as at-large representative on the Board.
Dr. Van Horn was not eligible .for re-appointment according to the
Board of Commissioners rules. Her expertise as a practicing
pediatrician has been very valuable to the Board.
The Board carefully considered all current applicants that qualify
for the at-large position and is recommending for your
consideration Mr. Michael Wood for appointment to the Board of
Health. Mr. Wood is an environmental consultant working on a
wide range of environmental issues. He resides in northern Orange
County. His skills as an environmental consultant will be an ~
important resource and give added depth to the Board and the ~ .
Department in its work on environmental issues.
Thank you for your consideration of this applicant.

I am a registered nurse with 10 years of trauma experience and over 15 years
experience working with Hospital Epidemiology. My role in Epidemiology has given me
the opportunity to work meet and work with many residents of Orange County and
various service organizations to include the Orange County Health Department. I grew
up in a farming community in N.C. and my children participated in 4H farm projects.
While I do not have any farm work experience outside of summer work while growing up,
I greatly appreciate the value that sustainable farming adds to the local community.
Volunteer Experience:
My county volunteer experience is limited to working with little league and soccer teams
while my sons were growing up. I worked as a volunteer for several years for MedWorld,

Other Comments:
My reason for applying: I have lived and worked in Orange County since 1985. Both my
sons were educated in the Orange County Schools and later successfully completed
college degrees at UNC-CH and NC State University. Living in Orange County had been
a rewarding and enjoyable experience for me and my family and I would very much like
to give back to this community in a meaningful capacity. I grew up in rural N.C., live in
the county and work in Chapel Hill. I feel I would be a good representative for the
interests of both rural and urban county residents. Thank you for considering my
application.) wish to be a part of the~process to plan the long term future of the
Environmental Resources and Agricultural Productivity of Orange County. STAFF

Boards/Commissions applied for:
Orange County Planning Board
Board of Health
Work Experience:
I am a retired thirty year Navy Medical Admin. Officer and Vietnam Veteran. I formerly
was employed at the Sportsplex for two years and now work partime at the Carolina
Fitness Center in Carrboro.
Volunteer Experience:
1 am a Member of the Orange County Advisory Group for the County Sportsplex in
Hillsborough. Chiarman Bany Jacobs asked me to apply for this fine position on the
Planning Board for Orange County.
Education:
Middletown, NY High School - "63 AA, Business Administration, Trenton, NJ '65 BA,
Business Administration, Kent State, Kent, Ohio '73
Other Comments:
I was on the forefront in quietly assisting the County with the vast purchase of the
Sportsplex by offering up heads up information to assure a smooth and reliable take over
Ethan Vance (the Sellor) by the County for the population for our Orange County
residents. I have some ideas that could increase the revenues cycle and we need to
make our county resident aware of the facility with perhaps a county wide campaign.
Thanks for considering my request to be on this most important County Baord and I feel
that I would be of assistance to the other Board members and citizens of our Orange
County.
