BOARD OF COP+II~IISSIOIiERS
February 23, 1970
The Board of Commissioners of Orange County met in special session at
3 o~clock P.M. on Monday, February 23, 1970, in the District Courtroom at the
Courthouse in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
Members Present: Chairman Carl M, Smith and Commissioners Harvey D.
Bennett, William C. Ray, Henry S. Walker and Ira A, Ward.
Members Absent: None
The following repreaentativea of the State Highway Commission were prosent:
Clifton Benson, Division Highway Commissioner, P. L. Welsh, Division Fkigineer,
Earl Hoover, District Engineer, and Bryant Brewer, County Maintenance Supervisor.
The meeting was held for the purpose of discussing with the renreaentatives
of the State Highway Commission the secondary road plan, which would be instituted
in 1970, for Orange County.
Discussion ensued relative to the following roads: Acaesa road to Orange
High School from N. C, highway 86, access road to Chapel Hill High School from
Eatea Drive Extension, Secondary road 1333, which leads into Lake Orange,
Secondary road 1179, which is an extension of the Union Grove Church road, the
Tack Walker road, the Marvin Evans road and Highway ~ eastward Prom Chapel Hill
to Raleigh. The Board of Commissioners stated that in their opinion the above
referred roads were of vital importance to Orange County.
Mr. Benson advised the Board that the improvements to Highway 51}, eastward
from Chapel Hill to Raleigh, held the hir~hest priority rating, as far as he
was personally concerned, however, until the designated route for Interstate l.~..D
in the Durham area was determined any plena for improving highway 5L{. must be
deferred as there is a probability that Highway s!} would be routed into Interstate
40.
There being no further business to come before the Board said meeting was
ad3ovxned. ~

o~aloak P.M, on Thursday, February 26, 1970, in the Courtroom at the Courthouse i
in Hillsborough, North Carolina, j
Members Present: Chairman Carl M. Smith and Commissioners William C. Ray,
Harvey D. Bennett, Henry S. Walker and Ira A. Ward, j
Members Absent: None
This meeting was held for the purpose oP conducting a public hearing in
- canfunction with the County Planning Board relative to an amendment to the Chapel
Hill Township Zoning Ordinance.
Chairman Carl Smith called the meeting to order and then turned the chair over j
to Charlie Johnston, Chairman of the County Planning Board. Mr. Johnston proceeded ;'
`" to conduct the public hearing.
The minutes of this public hearing will be duly recorded in the Minute Racket
Book of the County Planning Board.
At the conclusion of the public hearing Chairman Johnston turned the chair bank
to Chairman Carl Smith.
