PURPOSE: To discuss the Board's process for preparing for and conducting their annual
planning and goal setting retreat.
BACKGROUND: The 1999 BOCC Meeting Schedule includes the annual retreat slated for
Saturday, December 11, 1999. Several Commissioners have indicated that the scheduled
meeting date is problematic. The Board may accordingly wish to discuss whether to reschedule
the retreat,, and if so, to select a date for that meeting.
The Board may also wish to discuss the structure of, and topics to be discussed at, the retreat.
Issues to be considered include, but are not limited to:
• Updates to BOCC goals
• Financial update
• BOCC priorities for 2000 -2001
Staff will prepare updates to BOCC goals (and status reports on other BOCC assigned tasks,
beyond those included in the adopted goals) and a thumbnail assessment of the County's
financial picture for presentation and /or review at the retreat. If the December 11 retreat date
were retained, these materials would be made available to the Board during the first part of the
workweek of December 6 -10. If the retreat date were changed, then staff would develop these
materials for distribution at least 4 -5 days before the retreat.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with discussion of the process
for and scheduling of the Board's planning retreat.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board discuss how it would like
to proceed with the planning retreat, and provide appropriate direction to staff regarding
preparations for that meeting.
