We would love to have the Orange County Board_of County Commissioners and
the Manager attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new middle school
and we apologize for the late notice.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Board of Education plans a groundbreaking
ceremony for the construction of the district's fourth middle school: the
R.D. and Euzelle P. Smith Middle School. The groundbreaking is set for
Wednesday, November 17 at 12 noon. The new school will be located on land
adjacent to Seawell Elementary School and Chapel Hill High School creating
a K-12 campus, which includes 2,000 square feet designated for use by the
UNC School of Education. The groundbreaking will begin with comments in
the media center of Seawell Elementary School, and the groundbreaking
ceremony itself will occur just off the bus driveway entrance to the
school. (Visitors can park in the bus circle .for the groundbreaking
ceremony.)

Although the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools are well known for their
collaboration with other organizations and institutions, Smith Middle
School opens a new era in school collaboration with partners from these
institutions and governmental entities: Orange County Board of County
Commissioners, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the town
of Chapel Hill, and the town of Carrboro. The new school and the larger
K-12 campus are unique because they bridge property within the towns of
Chapel Hill and Carrboro as well as land which is being leased from UNC.
The school is named for R.D. and Euzelle Smith, veteran teachers who
together devoted 75 years of their lives to local education. R.D. was also
a school administrator and served for 20 years as a member of the Chapel
Hill Town .Council.
Smith Middle School, which will contain 140,000 square feet of space and
is projected to cost $19.8 million, is the fourth middle school in the
district. Fields that. will be constructed as a part of the project are
being supported, in part, by the town of Carrboro and Orange County and
will be used for recreation and parks programs when the fields are not in
use by the school.
At a later date, the site also contains space that is set aside for a wing
that may be added by the UNC School of Education.
