PURPOSE: To discuss issues of concern to the Orange County Board of Education.
BACKGROUND: The Orange County Board of Education identified a number of topics it would
like to discuss with the BOCC at the September 25 joint work session, time permitting. Time
has been reserved specifically to address the topics noted below:
a. Need for a new middle school
b. Funding for the school/site
Other topics identified by OCS that can be addressed at a subsequent meeting (or at this work
session, depending an available time) include:
• Impact fees
• ,Shared use of the media center at the new high school
The budgetary matters cited by OCS are slated for discussion under work session agenda item
1 b.

FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact tied directly to the discussion at this
meeting. However, decisions that may be made by one or more of the elected boards at
subsequent meetings are likely to have significant implications for future capital and operating
budgets.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the boards discuss the issues noted
and provide direction to staff, as appropriate.

RE: Agenda Items for Joint Meeting with County Commissioners
DATE: September 6, 2000
The Orange County Board of Education met on September 5, 2000 and '
agreed on the following items• they would like to discuss at our September
25, 2000 meeting with the Commissioners and the Chapel Hill/Carrboro
Board of Education:
• Anew middle school
• Funding for the school/site
• Impact Fees
• Shared Use of the Media Center at the New High School,
• 2001-2002 significant budget items
1. Class size reduction in grades 3, d, and 9
2. Spanish Teachers
3: Pre-K Classes in all K-5 Schools
We realize the agenda will be full and all of these items may not be
addressed. If that occurs; perhaps the items not discussed can carry over
to the next meeting. Thank you.
