PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of August 20-26, 2000, as Community Health Center Week
in Orange County.
BACKGROUND; Many citizens of Orange County are underserved by the medical community
due to such factors as geography, financial and/or language barriers and an insufficient number
of healthcare providers willing to provide medical services without regard to ability to pay.
Community health centers, such as Piedmont Health Services, Inc. help fill this need for access
to quality medical care for underserved communities.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board proclaim the week of
August 20-26 as Community Health Center Week in Orange County.
ORANGE COUNTY
COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER WEEK
AUGUST. 20 - 26, 2000
WHEREAS, There is a significant number of residents and citizens in Orange County
who are currently medically underserved far a number of reasons, the most prominent of
which include geographical isolation, financial and/or language barriers, and an
insufficient number of health providers willing to serve them without regard to ability to
pay; and,
WHEREAS, The Piedmont Health Services, Inc. is a private, nonprofit corporation that
provide high quality comprehensive health raze to medically underserved people in
Orange and other counties; and,
WHEREAS, The Carrboro Health Center and Piedmont Women's Health Center serve
many Orange County residents and have made great strides in the Orange, County health
caze system specifically by maintaining a high standard of accountability, demonstrating
cost effectiveness, empowering our community to develop programs to its specific needs,
enhancing opportunities far children and families, and providing health caze services in
accessible low-cost culturally sensitive environments; and,
WHEREAS, The Carrboro Health Center and the Piedmont Women's Health Center have
also made a significant difference in the health care system by improving access to
quality care provided by trained professionals for the underserved by promoting
individual responsibility and health awazeness in the community, and offering primary
preventive care of the highest quality to reduce preventable deaths, costly disabilities, and
communicable diseases; and,
WHEREAS, Community Health Centers such as the Carrboro Health Center and the
Piedmont Women's Health Center promote 144% access and zero health disparities to
help achieve primary health care far everyone and end disparities.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE ORANGE COUNTYBOARD OF COMMISSIONERS do
hereby proclaim .the week of August 20 through 26, 2000 as "COMMUNITYHEALTH
CENTER WEE%" and urge our citizens to recognize the important contributions of the
Carrboro Health Center and the Piedmont Women's Health Center to the improvement of
the general quality of life of the residents of Orange County.
This resolution is adopted this day of August, 2000.
