PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of Apri19 -15, 2000 as Orange County Government Week and
endorse the "Official for a Day" activities.
BACKGROUND: The National Association of Counties and the North Carolina Association of County
Commissioners encourage local governments to celebrate County Government Week in an effort to
educate citizens about county government.
For the past ten years, Orange County has celebrated County Government Week by sponsoring the
"Official for a Day Program". On this day, students from the three high schools are matched with
department heads and management staff during the morning to gain an understanding of county
government operations. After the mentoring, a mock boazd of county commissioners meeting is held
wherein students address issues often presented to the Board. The "Official for a Day Program" is
scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, 2000. An agenda for the day is provided as Attachment I.
Since these activities will provide an increased awareness of government operations, it is recommended
that Orange County proclaim the week of April 9 - 15, 2000 as "County Government Week". A
proclamation is provided as Attachment II.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Boazd adopts the proclamation and
endorses the planned event.
