PURPOSE: To consider an agreement renewal to receive$50,000 from the University of North

BACKGROUND: In 1994,the Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Canter received funding to
implement a Wellness Program at each of the Orange County Senior Centere and rural

ended June 30, 1997, but its success drew the attention of UNC Hospitals. UNC Hospitals
proposed to fund the Wellness Coo linator Position through contractual agreement with Orange
County. This renewal agreement will maintain existing programs and assist implementing new
programs to promote the health and well being of seniors such as community education, fitness,
screenings and flu shots. The Friends of the Chapel Hill Senior Center will continue to provide
operating expense support for this publidprivate partnership. Approximatey 1000 seniors were
served by the Wellness Program last fiscal year
FINANCIAL IMPACT: 'UNC Hospitals will reimburse Orange County up to$50,000 for the
salary and fringe benefits for the permanent, full-time Senior Public Health Educator who directs
the Wellness Program. (Budgeted costs for salary and fringe benefits equal $47,09D in the
current fiscal year.) Operating expenses (supplies and materials)are provided through Friends
of the Senior Center funds and class fees, budgeted at$7,892 and $24,000 respectively.
