PURPOSE: To officially recognize the newly implemented H2Orange Drought Response Program.
BACKGROUND: The H2Orange Drought Response Program held its kick-off with a press briefing
Friday, September 13, with representatives of Wal-Mart of Durham/Chapel Hill on hand to donate
over 1 ,000 gallons of bottled water to area human services agencies and the Orange County Social
Services Department for their needy clients.
H2Orange is a work group comprised of local water suppliers, municipalities, government
agencies, non-profits, and the agricultural community collaboratively working to empower citizens to
conserve water and develop strategies for the months ahead. The multi-faceted campaign
addresses drought awareness, water conservation strategies, and encouraging consumer use of
water saving devices.
As water restrictions tighten, wells begin to dry up and the demand for water increases, local
communities search for solutions to the five-year drought. H2Orange will work to address these
issues.
H2Orange will have an informational display at this Board of County Commissioners meeting.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board officially recognize the
important work of H2Orange.

in 1965 to serve water 10 the rund areas of Orange and Alamsene counties. The office of
the corporation is located m 59M US 70,Me bane,NC,and its watertreatment plans is
located at 2101 US 70,EBmd,NC. Ourwater sconce is Corporation Lake and Lake
Oange provides additional water during drought conditions. Orange-mammce Water
System owns and operates its water treatment plant and distribution system The Board
ofDocctors began developing the water System in the late 1960'5. Wmawafirst
distributed in 196910 approximately 300 customers. The water system currently serves
3700 customers.

NOTE: Dye tablets are non-toxic.
Common causes of leaks and how to repair them
1. The toilet tank flapper or ballvalve (A)may not close tightly. Make sure
the valve seat is clean. Replace the valve if d is in poor condition.
2. Check the trip lever am and chain(B)to be sure they are closing valve (A)
properly. Adjust if necessary.
3. The water level in the tank may be too high,letting water escape through the
overflow pipe (C). If so, gently bend the metal arm(D) of the float ball
downward so it shuts off water intake at a lower level
4. Check the overflowpipe(C)for corrosion Repsir or replace the pipe if it
leaks.
