PURPOSE: To discuss plans relative to the Courthouse Clock and efforts to recognize those
providing funding for its restoration/repair.
BACKGROUND: In the attached letter dated August 9, 2002, Craufurd Goodwin outlines a
plan to erect a plaque in the Old Courthouse to recognize those parties who provide the
$30,000 in support necessary for the restoration/repair of the Courthouse Clock. As proposed,
the recognition plaque would include the names of the current members of both the Orange
County Board of Commissioners and Town of Hillsborough Board of Commissioners as well as
the names of potential private donors.
As plans for the potential plaque are being developed, input from the BOCC would provide a
basis for all parties to move forward on this initiative.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with discussion of the potential
plaque, and any expense for the plaque, if erected, would be at no expense to the County.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board review the attached
letter, discuss the possible erection of a plaque recognizing contributors to the Courthouse
Clock restoration/repair, and provide any appropriate direction to staff.

Dear John,
First of all, thank you so much for the most helpful
meeting we held last week on the restoration of the town
clock. It was comforting to see that we are all in agreement
on how to proceed, and we are most grateful for the
County's commitment to rehabilitate the tower while the
clock is away for restoration.
I would like to make certain also that the plans we have
developed for a plaque to be erected somewhere in the
Court House after the restoration is complete are
agreeable to the County. As you know this project is
perhaps unique in our experience as a cooperative venture
among the County, the Town, and the private sector, with
the three sharing expenses about equally. We are in the
midst of a campaign to raise $30,000 and have been
saying to potential private donors that if they make
substantial donations they will be recognized on some
kind of plaque. I appreciate that we must confirm this with
you and would like to do so. Our thinking has been to
erect a tasteful plaque in some appropriate place
containing the names of the members of the County and
Town Commissioners and all private donors who have
made gifts of at least $1000. We would, or course, expect
to bear all the costs of such a plaque and to submit a
mock-up for approval by both commissions. If you would
like me to present this proposal, or indeed to report on
plans ' for the project, to the County Commissioners . please
let me know.
