PURPOSE: To consider awarding a contract for the purchase of a Wheel Loader for the
Landfill from Gregory Poole of Raleigh, North Carolina.
BACKGROUND: A wheel loader was Included in the 2005-2006 Solid Waste budget. This
piece of equipment has a bucket on the front and is used in multiple applications around the
Landfill. Among these applications are:
• Loading mulch into citizen's/contractor's trucks
• Unloading large bulky items
• Loading gravel, etc on County trucks during the normal operation of the Landfill
• Push up Yard Waste when unloaded
• Push up Boiler Fuel into piles when unloaded and load into Trailers when ground
• Push up tires attire pile
• Push up Clean Metal and help load trailers with metal
• Push up White Goods
Orange County staff developed specifications. These specificaticns were part of bid solicitation
#261 that was sent to ten vendors as well as advertised an the County's website and the Herald
Sun Newspaper. Six firms submitted bids with Gregory Poole of Raleigh, North Carolina
submitting the lowest responsible bid that was responsive at a bid at a delivered cost of
$105,100. This price also includes a 60-month warranty on the power train as well as the
hydraulic cylinders.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The purchase price of the wheel loader is $105,100. Sufficient funds
were allocated within the FY 2005-2006 Solid Waste budget to purchase the piece of
equipment outright.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board award the bid to Gregory
Poole of Raleigh, North Carolina at a cost of $105,100 and authorize the Purchasing Director to
execute the necessary paperwork.
