Orange County AmeriCorps Project Summary
January 15 — February 27, 2003
Earlier this year, Orange County hosted a team of 12 AmeriCorps volunteers
for a six -week project. The primary project was for the team to clean up the
grounds around an old home site and pond located on County property
adjacent to the County's Southern Human Services Center. The work was
the first step toward the County preparing the site for future use as a small
conference center. The volunteers cleared storm debris and trash piles,
spread mulch around the grounds, cleared the area around the pond,
constructed picnic tables and benches, and developed a network of walking
trails through the woods. [One of the trails links to an existing trail on the
adjacent UNC Horace Williams property.]
Other work completed by the AmeriCorps volunteers included helping to
deconstruct two houses located in the Heritage Hills subdivision, painting
office space in the Whitted Building, and constructing several miles of
walking trails at the Little River Regional Park.
The County secured lodging for the team at Camp Chestnut Ridge. The
Camp also benefited from the project as the volunteers performed some
additional work for the Camp during weekends.
