PURPOSE: To discuss issues of concern to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education.
BACKGROUND: Superintendent Neil Pedersen reported that the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board
of Education identified the topics listed below as issues they wished to discuss with the Board of
Commissioners at this April 14 joint work session. To the extent they are not addressed here,
other topics identified in the Superintendent's message are addressed elsewhere on this work
session agenda or are slated to be addressed at a subsequent BOCC work session.

1. High School Planning Task Force -Final Report
2. School Facilities Task Force -Progress Report
3. Schools and Land Use Councils Report
Board and staff representatives of the work groups listed can provide brief updates and
respond to questions from other governing board members regarding results, next steps,
and timelines for addressing any business pending before these groups.

FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact tied directly to the discussion at this
meeting. However, decisions that may be made by one or more of the elected boards at
subsequent meetings are likely to have significant implications for future capital and operating
budgets.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the boards discuss the issues noted
and provide direction to staff, as appropriate.

Subject: Joint Meeting Agenda
John,
We do not have anything to add to the proposed agenda for the joint meeting on April 14th that we
have not already mentioned. We are expecting the
following to appear on the agenda:
- An update on each. joint committee headed by the BOCC, including a timeline for completion of its work.
- A discussion about how the merger implication report will be completed, including expectations of all
parties. (this is on our agenda for April
10th).
- We will be prepared to update the BOCC on the site and funding for the third high school (also on our
April 10th agenda). We are expecting to
present a recommendation for site acquisition to the BOCC on April 24th as you have suggested.
If there is information that you would like on any other topics, please let me know.
