SUBJECT: Oran a Count Senior Games DEPARTMENT: Recreation and Parks PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No Department on Aging ATTACHMENT(S): P clamation INFORMATION coN i ac ~ Lisa Berley, 245-2668 Recreation & Parks ro TELEPHONE NUMBERS: Hillsborough 732-8181 Chapel Hill 968-4501 Durham 688-7331 Mebane 336-227-2031 PURPOSE: To proclaim the period of April 7 through May 3, 2003 as Orange County Senior Games Events Days and to encourage citizens age 55 and over to participate. BACKGROUND: The Orange County Senior Games was established in May of 1988 with 69 participants. In the years since 1988, the numbers have steadily grown as the County placed more emphasis on year round programming and increased the number of events. In 2002, 172 seniors competed in 18 different events. The season concluded with an awards ceremony and dinner, attended by athletes, friends and family. The benefits to the participants and to the volunteers are great. Many seniors get involved for the sheer fun and fellowship that the games offer. Others use the competitions for motivation for daily training. The games strengthen confidence as well as muscles. Many qualify to progress to the State Finals and National Senior Games. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The financial impact is already absorbed by the County budget in the allocated funds for designated staff of the Department on Aging and Recreation and Parks Department who work with this program.
