HomeMy WebLinkAboutOCAC Minutes 03-10-2025 C-51 March 2025 Minute �14 Monday, March 10 1 6:30pm ©RANGEC©UNTY ARTS COMMissr©ra The Eno Arts MITI Attendees: Crystal Wu, Chair,Wendy Smith, Katie Murray, Celia Gibbs, Denise Duffy, vice chair, Heather Washburn, Linda Williamson, Sec., Josh Rosenstein, Renee Hayes, Lindsay Metivier, Gideon Young, Krista Bremer, and Francesca Talenti Absent: Saba Jordan,John Claude Bemis,Alexa Velez, Meeting Location: Online 1) Call to Order at 6:35pm by Crystal. 2) The board welcomed Francesca Talenti as our newest board member who attended her first meeting tonight. 3) Two corrections were requested in the February minutes. Gideon moved to approve the revised February 2025 Board Minutes, and Renee seconded.All approved. 4) Board updates a) UNC Student Liaison selection process discussion - discuss current process and suggestion to make it a 2- year term due.The board agreed to discuss possible changes at next meeting when Celia can participate more. The board agreed that a 2-year term would be a better structure. Several suggestions discussed were to publish the position more widely, have the current person propose more than one person. Tabled the discussion until the next meeting. b) Position #15 open April 1 -Saba is not going to serve a second term due to increased demands on his time. The board discussed the applicant pool including options to add an arts school K-12 teacher to the board. 5) Director's Report: Katie Murray a) FY26 Budget requests- Katie reviewed her proposal for 2025/2026 budget request.Although the County has communicated that they are putting on the brakes for funding, instituting a hiring freeze, etc., there has been an increase in occupancy tax pool that funds the arts. Katie is asking for 2 requests under the occupancy tax and 2 requests under Article 46 Sales Tax. Katie found out today that money for this year's camp scholarships has been identified and additional money from the occupancy tax for this year's programming. Budget amendment must still be approved by BOCC at the next meeting. b) July 4 First Fridays-what should we do about First Friday being on the Fourth?The board discussed leaning into and keeping it on the same day. Suggestions included tying it into other fourth events or having the event with earlier hours. Also, it was proposed that the exhibit for July tie into Independence/freedom theme. c) Open calls: i) Uproar(closes March 17) -website has gotten a lot of hits. Increased prize money and all three towns have agreed to a purchase award. Katie asked board members to volunteer to review grants. ii) Arts Educator Grant Program (closes March 31)- $500 grants for artistic and professional development. Applicants will be reviewed at the April meeting. iii) RFP: Rebrand (closes April 1) - open currently and hoping for lots of applicants. Katie needs a selection panel and asks any board members that are interested in participating to let her know. The goal is to have it wrapped up by September. d) Joint board retreat with Katie Weeks -will take place on April 23rd 9-4pm. 6) Liaison Reports - only shared pressing items a. UNC Student Liaison Update - UNC is on spring break. No additional update at this meeting. b. Chapel Hill Arts Commission - still being discussed by Chapel Hill that this board might be eliminated. c. UNC- Crystal Wu reports that UNC is on spring break and PlayMakers has announced its new season. d. Hillsborough Arts Council - no update at meeting. e. The ArtsCenter-Wendy Smith reported the ArtsCenter has a lot going on and performing arts programming has really taken off. f. Carrboro Arts - no update at the meeting They are part of a new town committee, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources.Their meeting time conflicts with this meeting time.They are meeting for the first time since September tonight. g. Visitors' Bureau - no update h. Orange County Artists Guild -no update Close the meeting at 7:56pm by Crystal Wu.
