HomeMy WebLinkAboutOCAC Minutes 11-11-2024 Orange County Arts Commission November 14, 2024 Minutes Attendees: Crystal Wu, Chair, Linda Williamson, Sec, Wendy Smith, Gideon Young, Krista Bremmer, Lindsay Metivier, Katie Murray, Renee Hayes, Josh Rosenstein, and Heather Washburn, Cellia Gibbs, John Claude Bemis, &Alexa Velez Absent: Denise Duffy, Vice chair, Saba Jordan, Meeting Location: The ArtsCenter 1. Call to Order at 6:38pm by Crystal 2. Krista moved to approve the October 2024 Board Minutes with one correction and Heather seconded. All approved. 3. Director's Report: Katie reported on the following items: a. Upcoming volunteer needs— Katie could really use volunteers to assist at a few upcoming events--first dance performance in the Eno Mill Gallery this Friday 11/15, work an information table at the Holiday Bazaar 10-5pm Saturday 11/16 and work the beverage tent at December First Friday. b. December Mutual Aide Auction update—changed the event to be the August 2025 gallery show with a silent auction of art from western NC artists. c. First Fridays—Shoaldiggers are performing at the December First Friday. Katie discussed input on the upcoming event and the hours for future events, which we might change to only 2 hours (7-9pm) from 3 hours (6-9pm). d. 2025 BIPOC AIR—call is open for a BIPOC Arist in Residence at the Eno Arts Mill. We've had two great artists so far in the program. Katie asks that we share her post about the open call on social media and our networks. e. AEP6 Presentations— Katie's presentation of the Arts Economic Prosperity version 6 results for Orange County is going well. She is open to presenting it at any group or board that we are connected to. She has presented it at the Visitor's Bureau and our County Commissioners. f. Jeep raffle—this is an initiative of the OCAA board. Katie is concerned with the small volume of sales so far. We must have 1200 to hold the raffle. The board discussed additional ideas to push additional sales. 4. Board Vacancy/Applications a. 1 open position— Katie is still working on filling our open position by talking to likely candidates. 5. Liaison Reports a. UNC Student Liaison Update—Cellia reported UNC has a student run magazine called Coulture and staff our working on articles and photography for upcoming edition. Also, Indian dance companies have been busy with Diwali. Student Film Association is kicking off their pitch party this Friday for this year's film festival. b. Chapel Hill Arts Commission — Bolin Creek Park Murals look fantastic. Katie participated in an informal discussion about how their grant program could possibly be opened to arts organizations that serve Chapel Hill residents, but not within the official city limits. c. UNC update by Crystal — PlayMakers has a Christmas Show that is opening soon. Carolina Performing Arts has lots of interesting performances coming up such as Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens and the UNC Music department performances. d. Hillsborough Arts Council —John said they are gearing up for the Solstice Walk on iSat 12/16 (5-8pm market) where 1000s of people attend. HAC is also looking for board members that live in Hillsborough if anyone has any suggestions. e. The ArtsCenter update by Wendy— Elf Market was last weekend was really good per the attendees and the vendors. Lots of upcoming performances that are really taking off at the ArtsCenter. UNC has been using the ArtsCenter space for arts classrooms/events. Also, added a regular comedy show. f. Carrboro Arts update—move the dates of film festival to end of January. Working on the mural project for 203 building. g. Visitor's Bureau update by Wendy—highlight was Katie's presentation on the economic impact of the arts (AEP6). h. Orange County Artists Guild by Heather—the Guild just finished up the Fall Open studio tour. It was very well attended. i. Gideon reported that the Carrboro Poetry Festival was very well received. There were lots of first-time readers and good workshops. The Poet Council needs a couple more people to join them in their planning. 6. Our December 9t" meeting will be a joint board Holiday event at Ashely Nissler's house. 7. Crystal adjourned the meeting at 7:41pm.
