HomeMy WebLinkAboutOCAC Minutes 03-11-2024 Orange County Arts Commission March 11, 2024 Minutes Attendees: Anita Mills, Chair John Claude Bemis, Lindsay Metivier, Linda Williamson, Sec, Crystal Wu, Vice Chair, Marc Miller, Katie Murray, Gideon Young, Krista Bremer, Wendy Smith, Fred Joiner, Denise Duffy, Sadie Allen, Saba Jordan Meeting Location: Zoom Meeting 1. Call to Order at 6:39pm by Anita Mills, Chair. 2. Saba moved to approve the February 2024 Board Minutes and Lindsey seconded.All approved. 3. Board updates a. Board Updates: i. Wendy Smith—approved as new member and will also serve as Tourism board liaison. ii. Tonight is Fred and Anita's last meeting and will cycle off the board. Katie thanked them for all their support over the years and for being wonderful, dedicated board members. iii. Katie will be meeting with Savada Gilmore about our Board. Katie also reached out to Alexa Velez. Both have been discussed by the board previously and are both interested in working with us. iv. Heather Washburn—we all voted unanimously to accept her application and will go to the next appropriate BOCC meeting (maybe April). b. Executive Roles i. Crystal Wu, Chair= Lindsey made motion and Denise seconded to approve Crystal as the new Chair. ii. Linda Williamson, Secretary= Denise made motion and Marc seconded to approve Linda to continue as Secretary. iii. Vice-Chair—vacant at this time, but Katie needs folks interested. 4. Director's Report a. FY25 Budget Update—budget time with the County. Katie's meeting with the County Manager for her department is April 3 d. Katie will be presenting her budget needs, especially given the fact that ARPA money is now ending.The board discussed how extremely important all the Eno Mill staff are to the success of arts programming. Orange County just conducted a strategic survey that had arts goals throughout.Arts programming at the Eno Mill and the rest of the county has had significant impacts on the community. The board offered Katie suggestions and advice for the upcoming budget discussions. b. Eno Mill i. Studio Updates—one studio is available now. One large one in the front will be available in August and a small one in the back will be available in April. ii. First Friday April 15t—will be a big show with a great band. c. Grant Updates i. Timeline adjustments-State Arts Council has rearranged their grants, which is impacting when we can open our grants. We might not be able to open our grants until June V ii. The NC State Arts Council is finally revamping the Grass Roots applications.They have put together a panel to review the existing process and propose some changes. Katie will serve on that panel. iii. Survey review—Artist Project Grant survey will be used this year in lieu of listening sessions. Katie asked us to review the survey questions and email her suggestions or changes this week. d. OCAA i. Big Night In 2024—held last Thursday. It went well, but it was harder to get sponsors this year. ii. Board recruitment—need to recommend potential folks to fill that board. 5. Liaison Reports a. UNC Student Liaison Update—no update b. Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission—no update c. UNC—Crystal reported that UNC is on spring break. "Murder on the Orient Express" has opened. Arts Everyday is going to happen on Friday,April 19. The music department is super busy with free concerts every week that we should check out. d. Hillsborough Arts Councils—John said Last Friday busy season is ramping up and the HAC fundraiser is happening 3/23/2024. e. The ArtsCenter—Wendy has her gala coming up this Saturday 3/16. Spring Arts school has started. Summer Camp spaces are filling up f. Carrboro Arts—Wendy said arts committee didn't meet last month. g. Visitor's Bureau—Wendy saw a great presentation about University Place, which is going to be a walking mall type facility.An international soccer game is coming back this summer. h. Orange County Artists Guild—first meeting of the year will be on March 14th at the Arts Center Theatre. New members will share their work and sign up for committees. 6.
