Attendees: John Claude Bemis, Lindsay Metivier, Fred Joiner, Saba Jordan, Linda Williamson,

Meeting Location: Peel Gallery, Chapel Hill NC
1. Call to Order at 6:35pm by Crystal Wu.
2. Lindsay moved that Sept 2023 Board Minutes be approved and Marc seconded. All approved.
3. Board updates
a. 2024 Officer Slate
i. Katie recommended same slate of officers for 2024 and all current officers
agreed to continue serving.
ii. Fred made a motion to accept the proposed slate of officers and Denise
seconded the motion. All Approved
b. Katie asked if she could hold a board orientation re-do before Nov meeting.
i. Yes, all agreed that orientation would be before the 11/13 meeting.
c. Board vacancy—we have one opening. We are supposed to maintain a board
composition that matches the community, which would be about 30% people of color.
Katie has two folks that would be a good fit. We need to identify more folks that could
serve in the future. Board agrees that Katie should reach out to the two folks, and if
either are interested and apply, Katie would let us know via email.
d. December Holiday party—12/11/2023 at Anita's House—regular meeting time
4. Director's Report
a. Events
i. Paint it Orange& Raffle fundraiser.
1. Very successful event. Great fund raising this year which had 70
painters. Sold 44 paintings on first night and 5 more the next. Event has
grown so much in the past few years.
2. Have a raffle tied to Paint it Orange --$1000 gift certificate at William
Travis Jewelry. $10 raffle tickets are available and only 1000 will be sold.
3. Paint it Orange Show goes through November this year supplemented
with NC Claywork Guild show in November.
ii. Uproar wrap up
1. Surveys have gone out to artists and sponsors. Results should be back
by Monday 10/16.
2. On the 26th of October, Katie will be hosting a lunch debrief. Board
members are invited. Please let Katie know if you are attending and
haven't told her.
iii. Important Dates:
1. Wed, October 11, 7-9pm Weave &Spin featuring Fred!
2. Tues Oct 17, 7pm FY24 Grants Presentation at Board of County
Commissioners—Whitted Building, Hillsborough. Board members
attend if you can support artists and be in the photos.
3. October 21ST, Bad Art Market at Eno Mill
4. Thursday, Oct 26, 7-9pm Pen2Paper Shop Talk w/ Dasan Ahanu,
Chrystal Simone Smith...need volunteer bartender.
5. Friday, Nov 3 6-9pm First Fridays feat. Paint it Orange, NC Clayworks
Guild, Shoaldiggers
6. Wed, Nov 8 7-9pm Weave &Spin
7. Sat., Nov 18 10am-5pm Makers @ the Mill Holiday Bazaar
8. Friday, Dec 1 6-9pm First Fridays
b. Eno Mill
i. November& December volunteers needed
ii. Holiday Bazaar—happening earlier this year so it can be outside.
iii. BIPOC Artist-in-Residence—plan to renew program since it has had such a
successful event.
iv. Open Studios& Studio Be—need to get word out about studios available for
rent Studio A, Studio 1, and Studio 6. Studio Be is an initiative to create a
dedicated space for at-risk youth that is discussing the open studio.
c. Marketing& re-branding strategy options were discussed for the non-profit arm and
OCAC including suggestions for resources in the community. Group agreed it was better
to try for a more professional approach to a total marketing/branding solution vs piece
meal solutions based on limited budget dollars available now.
5. Liaison Reports
a. UNC Student Liaison Update— Sadie updated the board on lots of activities taking place
on UNC campus in October.
b. Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission.—first meeting in a long time is coming up.Josh
will have a lot more to contribute after that meeting.
c. UNC—Crystal informed the board of a new mural at Criag Parking Deck and upcoming
events at Carolina Performing Arts.
d. Hillsborough Arts Councils—John reported that the Arts Council has 3 new board
members and that the Exec Dir is on maternity leave.Work for the Solstice Walk event
has started (12/21). First Friday in October is Halloween weekend so will be fun.
e. ArtsCenter-Jennifer reported that the new building is open and is great. We should
have a board meeting there.They have an artist merchandize area with coffee and a
great makerspace available. She asked the board to take every opportunity to support
Arts Center staff since they are going through such a period of change.
f. Carrboro Arts—Fred reminded everyone that the West End Poetry Festival will be going
on October 19th—21St all day at Century Center and Arts Center.
g. Visitor's Bureau—no update
h. Orange County Artists Guild—Tour preview exhibitions are now installed and brochures
are out. Guild has bylaw changes coming soon to clean up procedural items.
6. Crystal ended the meeting at 7:55 pm.
