Meeting Location: Peel Gallery
1. Call to Order at 636pm by Anita Mills
2. Marlon moved that February 2023 Board Minutes be approved and Crystal seconded.All
approved.
3. Board updates Katie Murray
a. Updates
i. Denise Duffy application --goes to BOCC tomorrow night (3/14) so first meeting
should be in April pending approval.
ii. Jenny Schultz-Thomas application—presented an addendum for non-OC
residents to server on our board, which followed template from another
organization, but board did not approved it. Request was made to rewrite the
addendum to say we can have one board member at large not from Orange
County.
iii. Gideon Young potential applicant—poet Katie met through Coalesce First Friday
at the Mill and has a background in education plus lives in Chapel Hill.
iv. Christie Hinson Norris potential applicant—director of NC K-12 at UNC-CH and
works with schools across the state on arts integration.
b. CHCAC Liaison update -Josh's term on goes through mid-2024 so will be good in the
liaison role between our board and the CHCAC.
4. Director's Report Katie Murray
a. Katie passed around a Volunteer sign-up form for events at the Mill and noted that if
everyone just signed up for two events we'd have them all covered.
b. Grants
i. ARPA money will be used for countywide DEIA Program with Aisha Adams.
Information went out and 16 organizations have responded and we might have
70 participants.The first meeting is in person with a tentative date in late April
with the following three meetings in May and June. It must be over by June 30.
ii. Arts Educators—grants are live. Four$500 grants. Public and Charter. Deadline
is Monday 4/3/2023.
c. Big Night In for the Arts
i. Thank Fred for being the kickoff presenter for the entire program. Thank you,
Anita, for volunteering.
ii. Live streaming did not work until 7:40pm. WRAL is keeping the streaming up for
30 more days due to the issue. We saw lower donations, which is probably due
to the streaming issue.The show was really good—especially the vignettes,
which were theme based—community, economic, etc. Please share link to
show with all.
d. Eno Mill Updates
i. 3rd Thursday Concerts—changed to every other month. Also changed the name
from sessions to concerts.
ii. Open mic Weavers/Spinners is going great.
iii. Grow Your World Artist Residency is a one year artist residency at the Mill in
one of our studios.
iv. Events in the works—
1. Slam Poetry with Dasan Ahanu in partnership with the Orange County
Collation Association
2. Hosting the Juneteenth Ceremony (not planning the event)
v. Camps—Katie is asking all of us to spread the word about summer camps for
kids.
e. Uproar-Sponsorship/Artist Call - Deadline for Artist Call is this Wednesday.
Sponsorship deadline is April 15Y. Sponsorship is going well, but still not near our goal.
5. Liaison Reports
• UNC Student Liaison Update—no update
• Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission -staff working hard at the festival planning, basketball
court mural and women's empowerment mural, which is grant funded. Staff are also focusing
on the budget.The commission is still excited about the new poet Laurette and is still working
on name change. CHCAC is still finalizing process for the grant program in next fiscal year.
• UNC-on spring break this week. Big Mural is finally going up—Artist is from London.
PlayMakers just wrapped up their show.Arts Everywhere day is still happening.
• Hillsborough Arts Council - big fund raiser this Saturday with music food, etc.John
recommended the event to all.
• The ArtsCenter - busy with new building.Trying to augment what they do with Maker's Space
technology and working with UNC. Show this Friday is Jazz Fusion with local artists. Still have an
opening for Gallery coordinator part time job.
• Carrboro Arts—no update
• Visitor's Bureau—no update
• Orange County Artists Guild—no new information from the retreat yet.
6) Board member updates—board members shared updates with activities and events they are
associated with.
