November 2022 Minutes
Attendees: Fred Joiner, Chair, Anita Mills, Vice Chair, Linda Williamson, Sec., Sean Bailey, John Bemis,
Krista Bremer, Saba Jordan, Lindsay Metivier, Marlon Torres, Crystal Wu, and Katie Murray
Meeting at Peel Gallery: 708 W. Rosemary St., Carrboro
1) Call to Order by Fred Joiner at 6:32pm
2) Approval of September 2022 Board Minutes - Marlon Moved and Crystal seconded. All in favor to
approve.
Approval of October 2022 Board Minutes after Katie will add Crystal as attending and correct spelling of her
name —Anita moved and Krista seconded. All in favor to approved.
3) Board updates Katie Murray
• Board policy change request for Jenny Schultz
o Current policy is to live in Orange County. Jenny is the new ED of Arts Center and would
serve on our board and the Visitor board.
o Board recommended a motion along these lines based on final wording by Katie and
approval from appropriate county officials — "Non residents may be allow to serve on the
OCAC if a majority of their work supports the arts or artists in Orange County."
o Motion: We give Katie permission to request an amendment to our bylaws to allow non-
resident exceptions.
■ Fred Moved and Anita seconded the motion.
■ All were in favor.
• Paying board members for service —
o Now that we have an arts space and more arts programming situations have arisen where
our board members deliver arts within these programs. Katie would like to be able to pay
board members for this professional work. However, the County strongly recommends that
we cannot pay board members so nothing Katie can do to move this item forward at this
time.
o The board discussed that this is another issue that causes difficulty with keeping working
artist on the board.
• Board vacancy update
o Tori Danielik resigned as UNC liaison
■ Crystal leads an arts integration group of all the UNC arts departments. She
volunteered to work with that group to identify a student that could serve in this role.
■ Board discussed not immediately filling this position and instead allow Crystal time
to work with her arts group to identify a student that could get approved around May
and serve through the next academic year.
o Linda made motion to support the above approach and John seconded All approved.
• There are two vacant seats on the board from Sarah and Brad's resignations.
o Katie has a few leads. She would like to have a musician fill one of the seats. Marlon has
someone that he will contact.
o Fred made a motion that Katie should reach out to Denise Duffy regarding the second
vacancy. Lindsey seconded and all approved.
• 2023 Leadership Slate presented by Katie.
o Anita Mills — President
o Crystal Wu — Vice President
o Linda Williamson — Secretary
Motion made by Krista and seconded by Lindsey to approve the proposed slate of officers. All
approved.
• The board thanked Fred for his excellent service as board president for the past two terms.
• Katie discussed the need to complete new board member orientations for recent members that
joined the board and for the 2 vacancies when filled.
• For the December meeting we will have a holiday gathering at the Eno Mill on our regular
meeting time - December 12th at 6pm
4) Director's Report Katie Murray
• Grants/Eno Mill Presentation at 10/18/22 County Commissioner meeting.
The presentation was very well received, and meeting was a great celebration of the arts. It
highlighted the one-year anniversary of the Eno Mill. Katie thanked Saba and Marlon for being there.
The Commissioners had good questions for Katie.
o Infographic was a perfect summary of the impact of Eno Mill and could be shared easily on
social media.
• Eno Mill Update -
o We need volunteers for Dec 2 opening
o Holiday Bazaar December 3rd - 30 vendors + studio artists
■ PEFAB — hub for small food related start up
■ Cheese Shop — mobile
o BIPOC Residency - unsolicited grant received for $10K
■ $6000 for Uproar, public arts festival in July/August 2023
■ $4000 to do a BIPOC residency at the mill
• Year of studio rent
• $500 stipend to the artist
• Hosted Show at the Eno Mill
• Call for artists is out
o Katie is also looking for an underwriter/grant for LGBTQ Teen Arts Collective ($3600 for
one year).
• January 2023 Eno Mill opening is a solo artist. Event will take place inside with the beverage stand in
the back to encourage movement. There will not be a food truck at the event.
• Future spaces at the Mill would include a ceramics studio and dark room facility when Katie and
staff have the capacity to direct these efforts.
■ The board asked Katie if she had a Mill roadmap document. Discussion about how that
type of document could be helpful to list future possibilities at the Mill and how to get
there.
■ Katie's first step is to understand her budget and if staffing could be acquired.
■ Board is available to help with designing a road map
• Branding/new logo for Orange County Arts Commission
o Arts Alliance has money to pay for a professional branding/logo proposal and they've
agreed to pursue that work.
o A call will be issued
• AEP6 study — going but still need volunteers at arts events.
5) Liaison Reports updated at meeting
a) UNC Crystal Wu
Semester is wrapping up so a lot less going on
Music department performance upcoming
Ackland is open over the holiday so a reminder that it could be a good destination for families

Spring season just announced including opera

Just finished Artist Studio tour, which was a good show for most artist.
Saw Visitors from further out
We saw160 visitors to the Mill because of the Studio tour
6) Board member updates
• Skylight Gallery has pop up this weekend.
• ArtsEvery is looking for a development director
• Fred working with Max Dowd on a show in January where they are sharing work -- 9 poets and 9
visual arts and will be at First Friday of January
