September 2022 Minutes
Attendees: Anita Mills, Vice Chair, Linda Williamson, Sec., Sean Bailey, Mark Bettger,
Saba Jordan, Lindsay Metivier, Marlon Torres, Crystal Wu, and Katie Murray
Meeting at Peel Gallery: 708 W. Rosemary St., Carrboro
1) Call to Order by Anita Mills at 6:34pm
2) Approval of August 2022 Board Minutes — Crystal Moved and Lindsay
seconded. All in favor to approve.
3) Board member updates by Katie Murray
a. Appointment of Josh Rosenstein — going before Orange County
Commissioners at their next meeting
b. Board resignations & needs
i. Jenny Schultz is new Exec Director at Arts Center and has
applied for our board and the Orange County Tourism Board.
May take until November to get through all the reviews and
approval process.
ii. Two other resignations — Brad Porter is resigning because of
increased commitments. Sarah Shore is resigning due to other
job opportunities. She will be planning the UPROAR kick
off/closing parties so will still be working closely with us. We
would like to have a musician join our board to fill that
representation slot Brad held.
4) Director's Report Katie Murray
a. Executive Coach — The Alliance has hired Zemo Trevathan as an
executive coach for Katie to develop and enhance her business skills.
First meetings have taken place.
b. Paint it Orange — kick off meeting invite will be coming with an RSVP
for the Paint It Orange Harvest Moon Party on Wed, October 5t" at
Ramble Mill Farm
c. Grants Presentation will take place on Tuesday 10/18 at 7pm at the
Orange County Commissioner meeting. Board members please attend
the meeting at the Whitted Building in Hillsborough if you can. Also,
that night, will be the Arts and Humanities month proclamations and a
one-year anniversary update of the Eno Mill.
d. Eno Mill Update:
i. We need volunteers for Oct 7 opening. Please volunteer!
ii. First Fridays at the Mill will be our official name for monthly
gatherings starting November 2022.
iii. Studios available -please spread the word. We had 2 people
change their mind last week that had previously committed.
e. Executive Leadership — need to start thinking about new folks to serve
as chair and vice-chair of the board starting in 2023.
5) Liaison Reports
a) UNC Student Liaison Update — no update
b) Chapel Hill Arts Commission — Crystal said Chapel Hill & Carrboro are
planning the Christmas parade now and would like to celebrate different
cultures. Please spread the word. Crystal will send an email post meeting with
the details. Also, FestiFall is coming up October 8th. Tracks Music festival is
going on now.
c) UNC - Crystal told us Ackland Art Museum is opening their Rembrandt
exhibit. Soul Rebels will be at Memorial Hall and Big Frieda is leading a
Twerking workshop on campus. PlayMakers is finishing up their first show of
the new season. The Stone Center has 2022 diaspora festival of black and
independent film kickoff on September 29t"
d) Hillsborough Arts Council — no update
e) The ArtsCenter —just transitions from summer camp to after school with a
revamped after school program. Lots of shows coming up such as Bob Mole
10/16 and Josh Lozoff on 10/8. Two film makers made a movie in the Arts
Center called The Fog. Screening of the movie 10/28. DEI initiative starting up
again.
f) Carrboro Arts — no update
g) Visitor's Bureau — Katie reported that in Orange Slices newsletter there will
be an article about Paint It Orange
h) Orange County Artists Guild - Anita said tour committees are working hard
to make the final preparations for the 2022 Tour.
6) Board member updates — Lindsay talked about the current show in Peel and
Basement Art Space NC. Celebration this Saturday. Make//Take photograph
show at Peel and at Block Gallery. Peel opening is October 14'. Peel will
have a table at a Photo show in Durham on 10/2 and another even on Sunday
October 16
