HomeMy WebLinkAboutOCAC Minutes 08-08-2022 Orange County Arts Commission August 8 2022 Meeting Minutes Attendees: Fred Joiner, Chair, Anita Mills, Vice Chair, Saba Jordan, Linda Williamson, Sec., Sean Bailey, John Bemis, Sarah Shore, Marlon Torres (left for Grant Award portion), Crystal Wu, and Katie Murray 1) Meeting called to order by Fred Joiner at 6:40pm 2) Approval of July 2022 Board Minutes Motion: Sarah and Seconded: Marlon All approved. 3) Board member updates Katie Murray a) Resignation of Justin Haslett — notified Katie via email after last meeting. b) Current "Board Needs" discussion — Need liaisons for Chapel Hill Arts Commission and Carrboro Arts. Katie reached out to Josh Rosenstein about joining the OCAC board. Josh is on the CH Arts Commission already so fills a need. Josh submitted his applicable for the Board through the County portal. Brad Porter also notified Katie that he will be resigning from the Board due to time commitments. Katie will meet with Brad to understand his timing. Additionally, Katie reviewed current representation on the Board and discussed goals for increased representation. Marlon made a motion that we accept Josh Rosenstein application as an Orange County Advisory Board member. Seconded by: Linda All approved 4) Director's Report Katie Murray a) Paint it Orange Event is in the sixth year. We will have a "Paint it Orange Harvest Moon Party" on Wednesday, October 5t" at Ramble Mill Farm. Look for the sponsorship documents Katie sent to the Board via email. If we have any contacts with applicable businesses, please reach out to them. b) Eno Mill Update -- a) Two small studios and one large coming available soon — would really like some diversity of artists — younger, men, artist of color, etc. ii) Camps — In the last week of camp. For summer 2022, we had 78 kids with 2 scholarship recipients (15%). c) Piedmont Laureate — open now and genre is poetry. Information session will be soon. d) Reminder— September board meeting is on a different night - 9/19/22 — at Peel Gallery. e) Secretary will miss October 10th OCAC meeting and will need someone else to take minutes. 5) Liaison Reports a) UNC Student Liaison Update — no update b) Chapel Hill Arts Commission — need Liaison. Launched new Track Cohort of musicians. Chapel Hill Poet Laureate is open. c) UNC - Crystal Wu reported that Carolina Performing Arts and Playmaker's have announced their new seasons. Students moving back this week. Chapel Hill Town (not UNC) is hosting the South Arts Creative Placemaking Initiative (2-day conference) on Nov 3-4th. Downtown Partnership is bringing back bus skirts. d) Hillsborough Arts Council - John Bemis reported the Council has been focusing on finances and new board members. Open position for Gallery Manager. e) The Arts Center, Carrboro Arts, Visitor's Bureau, Orange County Artists Guild — no update. 6) 2022-23 GAP/APG Grants Disbursement Discussion • Board reviewed scores from the grant review subgroup meetings. • Grass Roots Organizations — reviewed funding scenarios and separated operational support organizational grants vs programming support. Board approved funding scenario 4 that prioritized organizational requests, high scoring program requests, and schools. Board also approved Katie reviewing organizational grant dollars to make sure it meets the needs of the County due to funding change, and if necessary, increase an award for one of these items. • Artist Grants — reviewed funding scenarios. Board approved funding scenario 1 that provided funds down to artist scores of 70% and above. Adjourned — 8:09 pm by Fred.
