January 10, 2022 at 6:30 p.m.

Board Members present: Fred Joiner, Chair, Delia Keefe, Secretary; Sean Bailey, Crystal Wu, Lindsay
Metivier, Hannah Fatool, Justin Haslett, Marlon Torres, John Bemis, Linda Williamson, Dan Mayer, Krista
Bremer, Brad Porter
Board Members absent:Anita Mills, Vice-Chair; Sarah Shore
Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director
1) Fred called the meeting to order at 6:34 pm.
2) Brad moved to approve the November minutes.
Marlon seconded. The minutes were approved.
3) Board member discussion
The board should cover visual,performing, and literary arts
as well as arts administration. The board represents Chapel
Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, and Mebane. It should be made
up of 30%people of color to represent all. Members must
live in Orange County. Visual artists should be well represented.
Katie listed some names of possible candidates and is asking
for more suggestions from board members. We will discuss
this again in February.
4) Director's Report:
a) Eno Mill Update
i) We are not sure yet about the next opening.
ii)We need a name for our monthly opening series that does
not contain"first Friday".
iii) The February exhibit will be Kennedi Carter.
Mango and Jessie have an installation in the hallway.
OCAG did not publicize much and did not have many sales.
We need to encourage more of a partnership in the future.
iv) Summer camps are in the planning stage and we are looking
for teaching artists.
v) We will have an open call for a group show in April titled
"Home"in partnership with OC Department of Housing.
This show could include spoken word artists. April is
National Poetry Month and this show could also include
poets and writers.
vi) We will be gathering input from artists to determine what
is needed for a community dark room.
b) Big Night in 2022
This event is scheduled for March 10—WRAL.
There are many asks to artists out. We are looking for
sponsorships. Last year's event supported the needs of
the mill to set up as an arts space.
c) The Beacon updates
This county-wide arts festival has been pushed to the summer
of 2023. We have received an NEA grant to fund this along with
funds from the county. Full details in February.
d) Fed, state funding updates
e) Update to Outside Agencies Grant for arts orgs
We will have a sizable chunk of money to direct. We need to
discuss how we will handle this money and how we will
hand it out.
f) Performing arts space for Hillsborough
g) Coming soon—DEI, Photography space groups
Katie hopes that some members will assist in planning.
We should examine our own practices concerning racial equity.
This educational program will be free of charge and available to
organizations that need it most. It will be required to have taken
this "class". Understanding historical background will be very
important.
5) Arts in Education Grant Application Review and remaining GAP funds
The board discussed using available education funds for the
Community Remembrance Coalition. This important cause fulfills
the multicultural requirement and we could combine this with
teaching school aged children about these issues.
McDougle Elementary School PTA grant application-
Linda motioned to support, Lindsey seconded. Approved.
Orange High School Theatre grant application—
Krista motioned to support, Crystal seconded. Approved.
Amended motion—to fund at $3000.
6) Liaison reports
a) UNC Student Liaison Update
Classes are in session. Challenge—how do we move forward
during covid?
b) Chapel Hill Arts Commission
c) UNC
The arts are very active. Navigating covid.
d) Hillsborough Arts Council
The Solstice Lantern Walk was attended by about 1000 people.
e) The ArtsCenter
The gallery is up and running in February. There will be concerts
in March. All students in classes and the afterschool program
must be vaccinated.The capital campaign is doing well.
Dan Mayer announced that this is his last commission meeting. He
is leaving his position as director of the ArtsCenter.
