PURPOSE: To receive a presentation from representatives of Duke Energy and Piedmont
Electric on electricity restoration efforts following the December 2002 ice storm.
BACKGROUND: A substantial portion of North Carolina experienced an ice storm during the
early part of December 2002. A large number of residences and businesses, including many in
Orange County, lost electricity for extended periods of time as a result of the storm.
Representatives from Duke Energy and Piedmont Electric will be presenting information to the
Board regarding issues their companies confronted during the aftermath of the storm as well as
efforts their companies made to restore electricity to Orange County residences and
businesses.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with receiving the presentation.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the presentation
and provide any feedback to the companies' representatives and County staff.
