July 6, 1965
The Orange County Hoard of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, July 6, 1965,
at 10:00 o'clock A.M., in the Commissioners Room in the Courthouse in Hillsborough, N. C.
?Members present: Chairman Harvey D. Bennett, Commissioners Gordon B. Cleveland, William C.
Say, Henry S. Walker and Carl M. Smith.
Members absent: None.
Allen H. Walker, Sr. was present and after some explanation requested that the Board consider
issuing to Walker's Funeral Home an exclusive franchise to operate ambulance service in Orange County.
This matter was referred to the County Attorney for consideration.
Monthly reports were received from S. M, Lynch, Clerk of Court, Walter Wrenn, Veterans Service
Officer, and James Wight, Welfare Director.

11r. Wight advised the Board that he had submitted to the VTelfare Board his resignation to be
effective September 1, 1965. Mr. Wight is leaving to accept a teaching position at the University of
North Carolina.
Chairman Bennett, speaking on behalf of the Board of Commissioners, expressed deep regret
upon learning of Mr. Wight's resignation and paid tribute to the excellent leadership and service
rendered by Mr. Wight in his department.
Road petition for paving Tinkerbell Road in Colony Woods was approved, and the Clerk was
directed to forward it to the State Highway Commission.
A petition for the creation of a fire district in the Colony Woods area was received and re-
ferred to the County Attorney for his approval.
Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Cleveland, the following motion was
unanimously adopted: That the Morris Telephone Company, in view of its recent rate increases, give to
its subscribers direct call service to Durham. The intent and purpose of this resolution is to tie
the local area phone system into the Durham system without having to go through a long distance
operator.
Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Smith, it was unanimously adopted
that the county apply to the proper state agency for permission to enter the food stamp plan in lieu
of the present commodity distribution program we are now using. .
The remainder of the day was devoted to a discussion of the proposed 1965-1966 budget.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned to meet
again at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July* 7, 1965, to continue budget discussions.
