Boards/Commissions Applied for:
Orange County Parks and Recreation Council
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
At the age of 19 1 was appointed by Salisbury City Council to the City of Salisbury Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board where I served as a liaison between the department and the managers
office and City Council. I also recently completed an internship with the Parks, Recreation, and
Community Resources Department for the City of Raleigh where I gained a great understanding of
what frontline parks and recreation employees are doing to improve our communities. I spent time with
the Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services, the Learning Development, the DEI, the
Environmental Education, and the Downtown Maintenance subdivision over the course of the summer.
I am currently a second year MPA student with a concentration in Local Government at UNC Chapel
Hill. Here I have learned about the structure of municipal government and have gained a great
understanding of how to interact with both elected officials and local government staff.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I want to serve on this board because I think that parks and the ability to recreate are some of the
most important things that a community can offer to it s citizens. Orange County is a growing
community, and as people choose to move here, start business here, or build a family here we want to
make sure that we are not just building communities that people can live in but communities that
people can thrive and have a great quality of life in.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I am a young person, currently pursuing an MPA with a concentration in Local Government at UNC-
CH. With my background in serving on a Parks advisory board in my hometown along with the
frontline work I have done with the Raleigh Parks department, I have a great understanding of both
what residents and people my age are looking for in programming and facility offerings as well as what
staff are experiencing and what they need from the county for support.
Conflict of interest:
Human Relations Commission
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
My role in developing a Code of Ethics with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team at the Raleigh
Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department highlights my commitment to ethical standards
and inclusivity, aligning with the HRC's mission to promote equal treatment and personal dignity.
Serving on the City of Salisbury Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, I gained valuable experience in
advisory roles and policy input, essential for the HRC's advisory functions. My work as a Program
Leader with Rowan County YoungLife Capernaum demonstrated my dedication to community
engagement and inclusive program development. As a Master of Public Administration (MPA) student
specializing in local government, I am equipped with advanced knowledge of public policy,
administrative processes, and community engagement strategies.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I am eager to serve on the Orange County Human Relations Commission because I am passionate
about advancing equity and fostering inclusive communities. This role offers a unique opportunity to
directly contribute to policies and initiatives that promote equal treatment and protect personal dignity.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I would contribute to the diversity of viewpoints by bringing a background that blends public
administration, community engagement, and hands-on experience with diverse populations. With my
academic focus on local government and practical experience in ethical standards development,
program leadership for individuals with disabilities, and legislative support, I offer a perspective
grounded in both theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Conflict of interest:
Animal Services Hearing Panel Pool
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
As an MPA student with a focus on local government, I have developed a strong understanding of
administrative processes and legal frameworks, which are crucial for conducting fair and impartial
hearings. My role as an Appointed Member of the City of Salisbury Parks and Recreation Advisory
Board involved reviewing policies and providing advisory oversight, equipping me with skills in
evaluating complex cases and making informed decisions. Additionally, my experience in diverse
program development and community engagement, particularly with individuals with disabilities, has
honed my ability to approach issues with empathy and fairness
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I am deeply committed to ensuring the fair treatment of both animals and residents within our
community. This role provides an opportunity to contribute to the protection and welfare of animals
while upholding the principles of justice and due process in resolving appeals. My passion for
community service and my background in public administration equip me to handle appeals with a
balanced perspective, ensuring that decisions are made impartially and in accordance with the law.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I would contribute to the diversity of viewpoints by bringing a multifaceted perspective shaped by my
background in public administration, community engagement, and ethical decision-making. My
experience in advisory roles and program development has provided me with a nuanced
understanding of balancing various interests and addressing complex issues with empathy and
fairness. Additionally, my commitment to inclusive practices and my exposure to diverse community
needs enable me to approach cases from different angles, ensuring that all perspectives are
considered in the decision-making process.
