BACKGROUND: The Advisory Board on Aging suggests policy and makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners and the Department on Aging while acting as the liaison between older adults of the County and County government. It is charged with promoting needed services, programs, and funding that impacts older residents. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all twelve (12) members. The board requests that the following recommendations be taken into consideration. The board requests that Jon Wilner be considered for appointment to a second term. He has been actively involved in the implementation of the 2022-27 Master Aging Plan by serving on the Social Participation workgroup. He has been able to assist us in establishing new community partnerships. The board requests that Shahnaz Gigi Rashdi be considered for appointment to a second term.She is actively engaged in the implementation of the 2022-27 MAP and helps bring a diversity perspective to our board. The board has a special request to extend Vibeke Talley's appointment to the board. Mrs.Talley has served two terms on the board.Minimally we would request to extend her appointment for one year,but ideally we would like her to serve another full term. She is the Orange County Senior Tar Heel Legislature delegate. She has done outstanding work in community outreach and engagement and in raising awareness of senior related issues to the NC General Assembly. She is a great asset to the Aging Board. I have a degree in Economics from the Wharton School and an M.F.A, in Film/Screenwriting from the University of Miami. I have been an actor, stage director, college instructor business person, non-profit Artistic Director(East Wind Theatre Company, NY; Philadelphia Area Repertory Theater), Executive Director (Delaware Vally Arts Institute; The ArtsCenter), and taught for the Lincoln Center(NY;) in their arts in education non profit. I was the founder of FimFest (Bucks County, PA) a yearly film festival. All of this diversity is relevant to the functioning of any board. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I am 77 years old and concerned about, what I perceive to be, a dearth of senior resources in Carrboro. I am well aware of the work that Orange County has done in serving senior citizens, but feel as though there are more ways to serve us. How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints? I am a senior citizen and understand the problems facing my peers. I am married to a senior citizen who is further challenged by being a survivor of a debilitating illness. I was a caretaker for my mother, while she was alive. I was a Teaching Artist and administrator, who brought arts- related programs into senior living environments. In short. my background in the arts, business and education gives me a broad perspective from which to generate ideas. From organizing the review of the studies to be undertaken and editing of the various manuals and files used to ensure the protection of humans. I also currently host a weekly radio show/podcast called Aging Matters that helps our aging population find information and resources in the community. Working in healthcare offers a unique and valuable perspective to the Advisory Board on Aging by providing firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities within the aging population. Healthcare professionals interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, enabling them to understand the varied needs and preferences of older adults, including those related to access to care, chronic disease management, mental health, and social determinants of health. This experience fosters an understanding of the intersection between health, socioeconomic factors, and aging, ensuring that policies and solutions are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the diverse needs of older adults. I'm not sure if conflict- but I do work at a nonprofit hospice/palliative care organization. I was very involved when living there and would welcome the opportunity to serve in Orange County as well. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board Working directly with individuals from varied backgrounds has given me valuable insight into how social determinants of health, access to services, and cultural differences shape people s experiences. I believe this perspective would contribute meaningfully to the Human Relations Commission, helping to promote equity, inclusion, and positive relationships within the community by advocating for policies that address the varied needs of all residents, particularly underserved and vulnerable populations. I think I would continue to focus on reaching populations who are less involved -or not at all involved - and meeting people where they are to engage them in the county conversations. Animal Services Advisory Board Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board I currently serve on the Board for a nonprofit dog/cat rescue, foster hospice/aging dogs, and am a volunteer at UNC Hillsborough Hospital with my therapy dog -Waylon. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board Animal rights and advocacy is a huge passion of mine! I work regularly with county shelters across our state and am very familiar with the system. How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints? What are your Board/Commission's most important accomplishments? • The implementation of the 2022-27 Master Aging Plan, including supporting the seven workgroups with 150+ persons and community partners participating in the quarterly meetings. Implementation matrix is updated quarterly and is posted to the Department on Aging's website. The workgroup leaders meet with the Aging Board quarterly to present updates on goals, strategies and objectives. At the end of Year 2 68% of goals had significant progress made. • Orange County was represented by the Department on Aging Director in the development of the All Ages All Stages NC Multisector Plan on Aging (MPA). With our county leading the way in NC in aging services planning, the Department on Aging Director was asked to co-lead the Strengthening Communities for a Lifetime workgroups, which is one of the four sections of the MPA. Our leadership in MAP development and years of successful implementation has also led the NC Division of Aging to model their implementation matrix after ours. • Supported Hands Four Development Cooperative (Fiddlehead Corner) for the UDO text amendment to allow for Family Care Facilities to be built under the MPD-CD zoning. Family Care Homes are an ideal model that supports aging in community. • Celebrated one year anniversary of our Aging Well Together Radio Show. • R Place, our volunteer-based respite program based on the Respite for All model, celebrated its first year of operations. The program has received outstanding support and has a participant waiting list. Plans are underway to replicate this program in our local faith-based communities. We are also exploring options with the Jackson Center to support them in offering a similar program in the Northside community. • Funding of the FitLot at the Seymour Center to support older adults to remain physically active. • Dementia Friendly Business Campaign continues with trainings to local business and government. • The newly graduated Project EngAGE Class 6 of 13 volunteers from across the county have reactivated the Falls Prevention and Health Promotion and the Neighborhood Connections Senior Resource Teams. The End-of-Life SRT hosted the first End of Life Expo with over 200 people attending. • Supported the re-design of the department website to be more user and reader friendly. • Supported Outreach Coordinator to identify underserved communities and to connect with faith-based organizations. Offered 9 events serving English, Spanish and Mandarin speakers. 33 • Hosted our annual Direct Care Worker Awards celebration. Caregiver burden is becoming a major concern for many persons and families living in our community. • Continue addressing issues that surfaced particularly during the pandemic, including social isolation, hoarding, access to services, persons aging alone in our community, and the increasing frail older adult population.
