SUBJECT: Volunteer Week Proclamation

PURPOSE: To approve a proclamation declaring April 20-26, 2025, as "Volunteer Week" in
Orange County.
BACKGROUND: National Volunteer Week was enacted in 1974 by President Richard Nixon to
celebrate the spirit of volunteerism and is recognized by states and local governments across the
country. This special week encourages all Americans to seek opportunities to provide service to
their community.
Orange County has hundreds of volunteers that support the missions of County Departments,
including over 250 residents serving on volunteer boards and commissions.

FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this item.
ALIGNMENT WITH STRATEGIC PLAN: There are no specific Orange County Strategic Plan
Goals applicable to this item. However, several of the Guiding Principles leading to the Strategic
Plan framework are applicable:
• Communication and Awareness
We provide information and opportunities for engagement in a transparent manner so that
all in our community have knowledge, understanding, and a voice.
• Inclusivity and Engagement
We foster an environment in which all are welcomed, represented, and empowered to
participate in and feel connected to their community.
• Dedication and Respect
We commit to our roles in public service and organizational excellence by fostering the
skills, talents, and innovation of our residents, employees, volunteers, and boards needed
to carry out this work.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve and authorize the
Chair to sign the attached proclamation declaring April 20-26, 2025, as "Volunteer Week" in
Orange County.

VOLUNTEER WEEK
April 20-26, 2025
WHEREAS, National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and honor the impact of
volunteer service and come together to tackle community needs and foster a culture of civic
engagement; and
WHEREAS, experience teaches us that government by itself cannot solve all of our nation's
problems; and
WHEREAS, volunteering one's time, talents, and resources has been an integral part of our
heritage since the early days of our nation; and
WHEREAS, Orange County has a strong history of improving lives, strengthening communities,
and making our County a better place through volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, it is essential that we continue this tradition of giving and sharing to preserve and
improve the quality of life for all members of our community; and
WHEREAS, volunteer service is needed more than ever as communities work to support and
uphold their ideals on a local level;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners
encourages all community members to celebrate Volunteer Week by promoting volunteerism in
our families and communities and being all in for Orange County;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners hereby proclaims
April 20-26, 2025, as "Volunteer Week" in Orange County.
