Re: Board of Health Vacancy
Date: November 30, 2005
The Orange County Board of Health has had a vacancy in the veterinarian slot
since June of 2005. Staff sent a letter of vacancy to each veterinarian practicing
in Orange County and received only a few phone inquiries. Last month the
Board received a qualified applicant and is requesting that you consider her
application. She is very enthusiastic about the possibility of serving and
understands that she would also be the Board of Health liaison to the Animal
Services Advisory Committee.
DeWana Anderson is currently a practicing veterinarian with The Animal
Hospital of Canboro and lives in southern Orange County. She would assist the
Board and provide valuable input to the Health Department in addressing
human health issues that are transmitted by animals.
Thank you for your consideration of this applicant.

I am a registered nurse with 10 years of trauma experience and over 15 years
experience working with Hospital Epidemiology. My role in Epidemiology has given me
the opportunity to work meet and work with many residents of Orange County and
various service organizations to include the Orange County Health Department. I grew
up in a farming community in N.C. and my children participated in 4H farm projects.
While I do not have any farm work experience outside of summer work while growing up,
I greatly appreciate the value that sustainable farming adds to the local community.
Volunteer Experience:
My county volunteer experience is limited to working with little league and soccer teams
while my sons were growing up. I worked as a volunteer for several years for MedWorld,

My reason for applying: I have lived and worked in Orange County since 1985. Both my
sons were educated in the Orange County Schools and later successfully completed
college degrees at UNC -CH and NC State University. Living in Orange County had been
a rewarding and enjoyable experience for me and my family and I would very much like
to give back to this community in a meaningful capacity. I grew up in rural N.C., live in
the county and work in Chapel Hill. I feel I would be a good representative for the
interests of both rural and urban county residents. Thank you for considering my
application.) wish to be a part of the process to plan the long term future of the
Environmental Resources and Agricultural Productivity of Orange County. STAFF

Other Comments:
I have a great interst in supporting community efforts to improve the environment for
diverse individuals. In both employment and volunteer positions, I have worked with
community organizations representing diverse communities and have made inclusion of
such activities an important part of my career and personal focus. I believe in the
fundamental right of all people to have full access to public services, employment and
living opportunities, and individual dignity. I also believe it takes individuals dedicated to
ensuring there is a safe place for those who experience discrimination to turn to in order
to help resolve specific situations and to create a broader community climate of
acceptance.
I am also very intersted in participating on the Orange County Board of Health. Although
the current vacant position is for a veterinarian, should a position for an at -large member
arise, I would be happy to discuss such a position with you. I have extensive experience
in working with local public health at both the local (county) and state levels as both an
employee and as a contract manager. STAFF COMMENTS: Originally applied for

Unified Transportation Adv, Board 9/7/2005. ADDRESS VERIFICATION: 159 Hamilton

Hospital of Carrboro and lives in southern Orange County. She would assist the
Board and provide valuable input to the Health Department in addressing
human health issues that are transmitted by animals.
Thank you for your consideration of this applicant.

Work Experience:
I am a registered nurse with 10 years of trauma experience and over 15 years
experience working with Hospital Epidemiology. My role in Epidemiology has given me
the opportunity to work meet and work with many residents of Orange County and
various service organizations to include the Orange County Health Department. I grew
up in a farming community in N.C. and my children participated in 4H farm projects.
While I do riot have any farm work experience outside of summer work while growing up,
I greatly appreciate the value that sustainable farming adds to the local community.
Volunteer Experience:
My county volunteer experience is limited to working with little league and soccer teams
while my sons were growing up. I worked as a volunteer for several years for MedWorld,
a UNC medical volunteer team that collects and recycles medical supplies to developing
nations. I was recently appointed to serve on the Ag Center Work Group and look
forward to serving on that team.Orange Co. Public Health Reserve Corps. Medworld-

Other Comments:
My reason for applying: I have lived and worked in Orange County since 1985. Both my
sons were educated in the Orange County Schools and later successfully completed
college degrees at UNC -CH and NC State University. Living in Orange County had been
a rewarding and enjoyable experience for me and my family and I would very much like
to give back to this community in a meaningful capacity. I grew up in rural N.C., live in
the county and work in Chapel Hill. I feel I would be a good representative for the
interests of both rural and urban county residents. Thank you for considering my
application.] wish to be a part of the process to plan the long term future of the
Environmental Resources and Agricultural Productivity of Orange County.
