Welcome-Ann welcomed the group to our last meeting of 2024. 2. Introductions and Announcements a. The group went around the table for introductions. b. Janice shared Hoyt Shuford's visitation and service time for this Saturday. b. Dr. Joanne Wilson-Officially appointed to the board on November 19. 3. Approval of Minutes-Minutes from November 12, 2024, were approved as written. Director's Report 4. Staff updates a. Seymour Center Evening Facility Manager- Kristin Tinnen b. Seymour Center Evening Front Desk Assistant-Gwyn Esch c. Seymour Center Program Coordinator Assistant-Jacob Toomey d. Outreach Coordinator-Kathleen Goodhand will be leaving the position. Discussions surrounding the future of this position will happen in January. e. Employment Services - Robert Bradford will be leaving the position. Discussions surrounding our Employment MAP goals and community needs are planned. 5. Promotional video filming for R Place and update department website video. Sheila Evans is featured in the new video. Videos are currently being edited. 6. Medicare Part D Open Enrollment. Over 500 people have been served during this year's open enrollment. More stats are upcoming. 7. Meeting with Town of Mebane: • The county manager, interim county manager and Janice met with the interim Mebane Town Manager to discuss service to Orange County older adult residents in Mebane.The Town of Mebane is exploring options to provide more services to their older adult population. They have a history of service agreements with other agencies and this meeting was to explore possibilities with the OCDoA and possibly OCPT. • Currently, the MebFit 5k raises money each year to pay for current fitness programming. • Mebane is in the Triad AAA, not Central Pines. • Triad AAA uses evidence-based fitness instructors; they already talked to them about providing classes at the Mebane Arts Center. Unsure of where it will go. The group discussion focused on the growth in Mebane and its impact on services and facilities.While residents from neighboring areas can access some general services, certain programs, such as lunch and AT services, are restricted due to funding.The group highlighted the need for additional facilities due to space limitations at existing centers, though a lean budget year and the lengthy process for new construction present challenges. Funding for operations is split roughly 60% county and 40%federal. Emphasis was placed on fostering collaboration with area agencies and ensuring positive relationships with neighboring counties. 2022-27 Master Aging Plan 8. First Quarter Year 3 Reports from Workgroup Leaders a. Communications—Marilyn Hohl I. Orange County Equity& Inclusion database from Tate Consulting shared with Workgroup. Database is compatible with Emma communications software to send audience-specific information by group II. Video spotlighting OCDoA VC 55+volunteer, Jackie Podger, was created and posted to OC YouTube. Uploaded to OCDoA YouTube. Video spotlighting OCDoA Handy Helper volunteer, Roger Callanan, was created and posted to OC YoutTube. Uploaded to OCDoA YouTube. III. OCDOA staff tabled at 4 events sharing information in English, Spanish and Chinese making direct contact with 170+ individuals. b. Community Support and Health Services—Shenae McPherson and Latonya Brown I. MOWOCNC: Have two Mandarin Chinese speakers checking in with our Mandarin speaking clients. Increased #of UNC/college student volunteers (mostly over summer-6; but have 2-3 that are new for fall). II. OCDOA: July 18, 2024-4 dementia friends trained (volunteers); August 4, 2024- 27 dementia friends trained (faith-based: Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church); August 29, 2024—8 dementia friends trained (education: UNC-Chapel Hill Students) III. OCHD: We have a connection with the Cedar Grove community center where the older adults, —30, participated in the CHA listening sessions last fall and will be presenting to them in October 2024 on our community health improvement plans and will be asking for their feedback IV. UNC Health Trauma Program: meet once a month at Cedar Grove Community Center since April for a Walk with Ease monthly walk(July 10th and September 4th, 2024). Participants have continued meeting on their own on Wednesdays for an open gym walk. These monthly classes will resume later in November or December of this year. We launched a new 7-week Walk with Ease class at Efland-Cheeks Community Center in September. Promotional efforts yielded 9 interested participants.There was an introduction class on Sept. 25th and there were 9 individuals that participated. Weekly classes will last through Nov. 6th (Wednesdays 11 am-12 pm). V. Green Burial Project: Heart 2 Heart (Mandarin speakers Death Cafe/Claire Chen, facilitator) held 5 Wishes (Advance Directives) sessions in July and August. c. Housing—Kendall McMillan I. Angel Padilla, our summer Master of Public Administration student, conducted research towards some of our policy related indicators. She prepared reports on: o ADUs in Orange County(including cheat sheets on the ordinances for each individual jurisdiction), o How to incorporate age friendly policies into the Orange County and Chapel Hill Land Use Ordinances, o How to ensure the Department on Aging is included in new housing development reviews. o Reviewing other communities home repair programs to determine is Orange County may be able to utilize alternative funding source II. The home preservation coalition is exploring a partnership with a local organization to provide home repair workshops III. Group discussed intergenerational networks with housing, difficulty in housing costs, permits, etc. with ADU. Unified Land Ordinance is an important resource-there are public input sessions for community members to speak up. d. Employment—Janice gave updates. Communications updated website while Robert was out of office, Social Services assisted with employment inquiries. Discussions will be held to decide what can be done next.The need for these services may have changed, as well as the technology for applying to jobs- using a resume versus actual application. Will also need to evaluate MAP funding. 9. MAP Steering Committee—January 2025. Janice is looking for dates to meet at Carol Woods- potentially set for January 24 at 9 am. New Business 10. Board Orientation for new members—February I. Janice shared it will be after February 11 board meeting. Reoccurring members are also welcome. It would be about an hour. Committee Progress Reports if needed: 11. Senior Tar Heel Legislature—VibekeTalley I. Held October meeting. 8 issues will be presented to the legislature next year.Very responsive local representatives. Continuing monthly tabling. Cedar Grove presentation in November. Efland Cheeks in January. Interest has been positive and strong. A new chair at the state level is very involved. a. STHL alternate delegate-Rafael Velez I. Housing, healthcare (and funding) are top issues. 12. Nursing Home and Adult Care Home Joint Community Advisory Committee-Jackie Podger I. Quarterlyvisits are happening, manyfacilities have Angel Trees. Meetingwith Chatham County CAC to discuss recruitment, community involvement, and community wellbeing next year. 13. Friends of the Passmore Center-very successful Holiday Market! 14. Friends of the Seymour Center-Shelia Evans I. Send holiday cards each year made by art class/art instructor as fundraiser. Sending 400 out currently. Travel Interest group meeting January 13. Upcoming board member training session on nonprofit legal compliance standards. Meeting on succession planning for help with future members. Jon is going to speak at Solo Agers in March, a successful networking connection here.
