Can submit more information by email for inclusion as an agenda item for discussion at a future meeting General Public Comments (not on agenda): None Monthly Meeting Attendance Record: Confirmed through approval of meeting minutes New Business: 1. Pat Sanford grant- $500 given annually to groups that help animals in Orange County. The grant is in honor of Pat Sanford, former Executive Director of the former Animal Protection Society of Orange County. Committee comprised of Judy Miller, Michael Dempsey, Sunita Driehuys, Tiani Stamey Page 2 of 5 and Krista Watkins met to discuss the applications and recommend that the award be given to Independent Animal Rescue (IAR) to purchase traps for community cats. Alan Dow, IAR president, attended meeting to accept the grant award. Discussed DEGA and Dogs Deserve Better as other local groups that may be able to help IAR with their mission of providing lower cost spay/neuter services to the community. Orange County Boards and Commissions Annual Report—ASAB needs to submit annual report by Januaryl7, 2025 and this will be presented to BOCC in February or March. Tiani Stamey, Interim Director of OCAS, will prepare the report and it will be presented by Allan Polak as chairperson of ASAB. Page 3 of 5 She presented a draft for input from ASAB members and will send the document by email. Final document will be presented to ASAB on January 15th for approval to present to BOCC on January 17th Animal Services Advisory Board: Currently have 1 vacancy on ASAB —Town of Hillsborough position Old Business: Youth Delegate Committee presentation by Debby Hill—committee has a proposal to present and will provide a written summary to ASAB members to discuss and vote on at January meeting. Goal is to solicit and accept youth delegates mid-2025. Information Items: Presented by Tiani Stamey 1. OCAS Director position has been posted -hoping to have new director named by February 2025 2. OCAS is currently running adoption specials 3. Last week had presentation to 7th graders by ACO and Program Coordinator 4. Recently had veterinary students complete shelter externships 5. Have a few events/workshops planned for veterinary students in December 6. Annual holiday potluck at OCAS will be on December 12th at 11 a.m. There will be a home-baked goods competition 7. There is a Dangerous Dog/Chronic Nuisance appeal being scheduled soon 8. Currently have 53 dogs and 73 cats under OCAS care. Many of the cats are in foster homes 9. Morale is currently good at OCAS. Chandler has been initiating fun staff events Informal Discussion: 1. Allan requested a tour of OCAS after January meeting for any interested ASAB members. 2. Dr. Lee Pickett continues to volunteer with DEGA for animal care in western NC post- Hurricane Helene and shared some success stories amidst the devastation and need. There still is not potable water, internet or good roads in many areas. Page 4 of 5 3. Debby Hill expressed gratitude to Allan Polak and Cathy Munnier for creating the script to be used at Dangerous Dog Hearing panel meetings. She recently used it, and it worked well.
