PURPOSE: To consider a resolution to officially recognize the work involved to commission,
create and display the six mural panels representing 250 years of Orange County history, now
on display in the Orange County District Courtroom.
BACKGROUND: Chief District Court Judge Joe Buckner, the District Bar of Orange and
Chatham Counties and the Orange County Bar Association provided primary concept, funding
and spirit for a public art mural created by Michael Brown and on display in the Orange County
District Courtroom, The six panel mural depicts, in almost a scrapbook manner, 250 years of
the diverse history of Orange County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The adoption of the resolution has no financial impact on Orange
County, The $35,000 cost of the six mural panels was addressed as noted above.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the resolution and
authorize the Chair to sign,

WHO CREATED A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF
250 YEARS OF ORANGE COUNTY HISTORY -
THE ORANGE COUNTY COURTHOUSE MURAL
WHEREAS, A mural commemorating the 250th amriversary of Orange County is nn display in
the Orange County District Courtroom; and,
WHEREAS, Chief District Court .Judge .Toe Buckner, the District Bar of Orange and Chatham
Counties and the Orange County Bar' Association provided primary concept,
funding and spirit to make this dream a reality; and,
WHEREAS, the painting by Michael Brown with help from Jennifer Miller represents one and a
half years of research with help from UNC students; and,
WHEREAS, during the last week of December 2003, six panels, 8 feet wide by 20 feet tall, were
installed in the courtroom; and,
WHEREAS, the art work contains 60 unique items representing the history of the County from
pre-Columbian times to the present and also the diversity of the people who have
called Orange County home; and,
WHEREAS, the majority of the $.35,000 cost was covered by the Judicial District 15B Bar and
the Stroud Roses Foundation and private donations;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners expresses
its sincere appreciation and recognition to Judge Joe Buckner, the District Bar, the
Orange County Bar, Michael Brown and the many others involved for their
outstanding effort and skills to bring this public art work to the residents of Orange
County.
