PURPOSE: To consider awarding a bid to Suburban Surgical Co., Inc, of Wheeling, Illinois for
the purchase of 100 stainless steel pet cages and 18 stainless steel bases for use at the Animal
Shelter.
BACKGROUND: At the April 20`h 2004 meeting, the Board approved a plan that called for the
County to assume operation of the Orange County Animal Shelter on .July 1, 2004.. In order to
ensure a smooth transition, inventory items essential to daily operation are being ordered for
delivery no later than .Jtane 21, 2004, All items on the inventory list (see attached) will fall within
the informal bid range and, with the exception of the cat cages that the Board is being asked to
address in this abstract, all items will fall within the authorization limit of the Purchasing Director
(up to $20,000).
Bids were solicited for 100 stainless steel cages of various sizes and 18 rolling bases. The
cages will be assembled in different configurations on the 18 bases, which will allow for easier
cleaning of the area as well as allowing more efficient utilization of the space,
The bid was advertised on the County website and bids were received from 2 companies,
Suburban Surgical Co,, Inc. of Wheeling, Illinois submitted the lowest bid that was responsive at
a total delivered cost of $30,756.24, which is approximately $6,200 less than the amount
projected in previous budget estimates, Although the cages being purchased from this bid are
a modular design to allow better utilization of the space, cages purchased by the Shelter in
1991 from the award manufacturer continue to be used.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Total cost of cat cages is $30,756.24 and will be covered in a future
budget amendment.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board award bid number 1369
for cat cages to Suburban Surgical Co,, Inc.. of Wheeling, Illinois at a total delivered cost of
$30,756,24; and authorize the Purchasing Director to execute the appropriate paperwork.
