The mission of the Historical Foundation of Hillsborough and Orange County and the Orange County Historical Museum is to enlighten and engage our community and visitors from around the world by preserving and interpreting the history of Orange County. Since reopening in 2020 after an extended closure, OCHM has been rapidly growing. We have moved from all part time staff to having two full time staff members, allowing us to increase the hours we are open to the public. We have seen significant growth in the total number of individuals served, from 1,828 in FY20-21 to 3,777 in FY22-23 and a projected 3,920 in FY23-24. We have also been able to present new exhibits, host adult educational programs, provide tours and field trips, produce educational resources, and open a hands-on children’s learning gallery, all free to the public. We have not gone through the process of becoming living wage certified yet as we just recently increased all staff to a living wage Docusign Envelope ID: 711B0470-AB31-4239-BFAB-654356E2FD21 1/16/24, 11:54 AM HSOA-24-58 https://chapelhillnc.workflow.opengov.com/#/explore/records/62597/files 3/17 Human Services Awards (Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange County) Small Awards (Chapel Hill & Carrboro Applicants Only) Community Impact Awards (Chapel Hill Applicants Only) Agency Demographics Please ensure that each subsection listed below adds up to the total number of staff and board members listed here. One of the goals of OCHM is to “Be Inclusive: Tell full stories that highlight the rich diversity of the county geographically, ethically, and culturally.” As the only dedicated history museum in Orange County, it is our responsibility to present content that is representative of all of Orange County’s residents. To do so, OCHM staff works with various members of the community and community groups to determine what content should be presented and how to promote shared authority in the museum. Decisions regarding the selection of exhibit topics and content are made in consultation with civic groups, elected officials, public and homeschool educators, local families, and organizations representing minority groups, such as the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation Tribal Council and Free Spirit Freedom. Continuous feedback is solicited from guests after viewing the exhibits and/or participating in programs. Additionally, pre-visit consultations are always conducted with any special tour group, including with educators. The Museum will use funds to educate the public about Orange County’s history with the development, design, and presentation of a permanent gallery and special exhibits as well as through free programs, activities, and tours for both formal and informal learning groups, and by collecting, preserving, and making publically available artifacts and research files about family and local history. In the past several years, the Museum has been growing its reputation through quality exhibits and programs. We are the only history museum in the county (as opposed to the historic sites that are limited in their interpretive scope). As such, we are the only organization that seeks to tell the full story of Orange County's history and all of its residents, past and present. This is a responsibility we take very seriously. Accordingly, we have transitioned to having two full-time 40-hour/week employees who have received periodic raises to stay aligned with the living wage for Orange County and to keep the positions competitive. These additional staffing hours have increased the services we have been able to provide and have afforded the museum the ability to continue to be available to the public seven days a week. Our staff’s knowledge and enthusiasm ensure all visitors have enjoyable and rewarding experiences. This includes providing tours of exhibits, assisting with research requests, and connecting researchers to community members who are subject area experts. Accordingly, it is vital that the Museum retains staff who are passionate about the organization and who possess institutional and community knowledge as well as scholarly expertise, along with research and interpersonal skills. The experience of visiting the Orange County Historical Museum is not one that can be replicated with an impersonal website or virtual exhibit; it is a personal experience that attracts new and returning visitors, all thanks to our incredible staff. A portion of the funding would be used to pay the salaries of staff operating the museum. The Orange County Historical Museum displays a permanent exhibit that tells the story of Orange County's history, from prehistory through the 20th century. This narrative is inclusive of all of the people who have called Orange County home throughout its history. The permanent exhibit is periodically updated with new artifacts and themes to keep it fresh and interesting for new and returning visitors. In addition to the permanent exhibit, the Museum produces a new special exhibit each year. These special exhibits focus on select themes from the Docusign Envelope ID: 711B0470-AB31-4239-BFAB-654356E2FD21 1/16/24, 11:54 AM HSOA-24-58 https://chapelhillnc.workflow.opengov.com/#/explore/records/62597/files 9/17 Funding Totals larger story of Orange County History and present them in innovative and creative ways with an emphasis on community engagement and proactively sharing more contemporary stories. A portion of the funding would be used to pay salaries of staff who are developing, researching, writing, fabricating, and installing these exhibits as well as purchase items, materials, supplies, and printing needed to produce these exhibits. One of our biggest priorities continues to be providing educational opportunities for the K-12 residents of Orange County. This includes hosting field trips, providing lesson plans and other educational resources to teachers, making traveling trunks available to schools, and hosting age-appropriate educational activities. A portion of the funding will be used to pay salaries of staff creating, planning, and facilitating these opportunities as well as purchase necessary supplies. A large component of our educational program is our Kids’ Space, a hands-on learning space for children to interact with history through play, featuring interactive stations themed around the diverse people and places of Hillsborough in 1823. A portion of the funds will be used to upkeep this space, purchasing new handling items and repairing and replacing those that are damaged through play. The remaining funding will be used to cover the purchase of general supplies and equipment needed to support the day-to-day operations of the Museum and its staff. In summary, requested funding will be used to pay salaries of staff completing the scope of work, including operating the Museum, producing exhibits, facilitating educational opportunities, and purchasing necessary supplies for exhibits, educational activities, Kids’ Space, and general Museum operations. Our goal is to engage with Orange County residents of all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Museum staff work with various members of the community and community groups to determine what content should be presented and how to promote shared authority in the museum. The presentation and content of exhibits are designed to appeal to a wide audience, with various interactive elements geared toward visitors of all ages. Our goal is for all visitors to be able to relate to and engage with the stories and themes presented in the exhibits. To promote lifelong learning, a variety of educational opportunities will be offered, both for adult learners and for pre-K-12 students. The Museum has and will continue to work with Orange County Public Schools, charter schools, homeschool groups, and others to design and facilitate field trips that align with the school curriculum. Our dedicated Kids’ Space allows children to interact with history in an accessible and fun way through play.
