BACKGROUND: The Orange County Parks and Recreation Council consults with and advises the Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation, and the Board of County Commissioners on matters affecting parks planning, development and operation; recreation facilities, policies and programs; and public trails and open space. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all twelve (12) members with representatives from each of the county's townships plus its municipalities, as well as two (2) non-voting youth delegates. Reyman's term expires December 31St. The Council recommends that applicant Benjamin King be appointed to the Carrboro City Limits position previously held by Chris Colvin. I also recently completed an internship with the Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources Department for the City of Raleigh where I gained a great understanding of what frontline parks and recreation employees are doing to improve our communities. I spent time with the Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services, the Learning Development, the DEI, the Environmental Education, and the Downtown Maintenance subdivision over the course of the summer. With my background in serving on a Parks advisory board in my hometown along with the frontline work I have done with the Raleigh Parks department, I have a great understanding of both what residents and people my age are looking for in programming and facility offerings as well as what staff are experiencing and what they need from the county for support. I participated as a judge for high school students submission for the state wide competition and submission to the national competition. I am very passionate about history and I feel this passion would be beneficial to the committee. While I am today a more passive participant(Pickleball and Golf), I believe that the county s investment plays a big role in developing people and our community. Not knowing about what happened before you is to always remain a child. (Cicero, I think). I think it s important to understand the context of history and many perspectives in the world to appreciate your own place in society. Lately, I ve been focused on learning local history, specifically about the first peoples, from Paleo- Indians to the modern day descendants of local tribes. It s a challenge because so much of their history is unwritten and so many of the people were lost to disease and oppression. Orange County Parks and Recreation Council Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board We recently purchased a 2-acre property in Orange County, and I ve been learning a lot about stewardship of the land, both from an environmental perspective as well as an aesthetic one. I was really excited about the new Blackwood Farm Park, and I love the new architecture there. I also participated in the OC bee group that took care of the bees there. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I want to help create more experiences and spaces for people to learn about and appreciate our environment. How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints? I like to think in really practical terms about how what the government does benefits the people it serves. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I think that preserving and improving our parks and public spaces is critical work that benefits all citizens. Making sure that such work is properly resourced, and that those resources are equitably distributed across Orange County, is important for the health and welfare of the people who live here, and is necessary to ensure that Orange County will continue to be an attractive location for families and businesses. Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board: I'm relatively new to Orange County, having moved to Chapel Hill from Durham in April 2022, so I may have a bit of an outsiders perspective. Also, as an attorney, I may bring some expertise that may not currently exist on the board. Fostering collaborative and constructive dialogue between diverse groups with differing agendas is difficult but crucial. I'd like the opportunity to help do this work across Orange County. Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board: Diversity of viewpoints is critical in any public endeavor, and especially this one. While I identify as a straight white male, I am constantly striving to better my understanding of the stories and life experiences of those different from myself. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: As a member of the Animal Advisory Board, I think it is important to be involved in this process. I am a dog owner, but I feel strongly about the need for dog owners to act responsibly with regard to the training and care for their animals. For college I went to school to study Biology at NC State. After graduation I like many young people today faced challenges finding housing. My wife and I originally lived in RTP but were priced out, and were lucky to find a nice home for us here in Orange. Since moving here I have served as a teacher at Orange High and have seen first hand the impact improper housing has had on my students, and would like to get involved. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I believe housing is one of those most important issues facing society as a whole today. Not having affordable housing impacts many facets of life from; occupation availability, health, savings, etc. Additionally as someone who has had trouble finding affordable housing I know the importance of this board, and its job. By serving on this board I wish to have an impact on one of the pressing issues for the community. How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints? As a newcomer to the area as last year I can bring a fresh perspective that can differ from those who have are born and raised in Orange. Additionally as someone who has struggled with finding housing and as someone who directly works with people impacted by housing, I believe I bring a important perspective. For college I went to school to study Biology at NC State. At NC State, I worked on aquaponics projects, and on conservation projects. Currently I serve as a teacher and Orange High where I teach the next generation Earth & Environmental Science. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board My interest on serving on the board is twofold. First I believe the nature present in Orange is one of the things that makes life here so amazing. Protecting it should be our goal just not for our physical health but are mental health as well. Additionally serving on the commission will allow me to talk to my students about ongoing concerns in their area and to educate them on how local government impacts them. As a newcomer to the area as last year I can bring a fresh perspective that can differ from those who have are born and raised in Orange. None Orange County Parks and Recreation Council Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board I was born and raised in NC from a middle class family. For college I went to school to study Biology at NC State. At NC State, I worked on aquaponics projects. With the aquaponics project we developed from scratch and maintained this public display. Currently I serve as a teacher and Orange High where I teach the next generation Earth & Environmental Science. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board As my wife and I try having kids I would like to have a place for my children and other children to experience the outdoors. Maintaining &developing these areas are key to the well-being of the residents. Additionally creating more public spaces in in the Bingham township would be beneficial for our community out here, and I would like to voice the concern.
