PURPOSE: To consider appointments to the Human Relations Commission.
BACKGROUND: The Human Relations Commission advises the Board of County
Commissioners on solutions to problems in the field of human relationships. It also makes
recommendations designed to promote goodwill and harmony among groups in the County
irrespective of their race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, sexual orientation,
disability, age, marital status or status with regard to public assistance.
The Board of County Commissioners appoints all twelve (12) members.

I handle employment discrimination complaints daily in my current job and directly investigated
wrongful termination complaints in my priorjob.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
I have always wanted to serve on a community organization. My wife and I have now put down
roots in Orange County and I am wanting to get more involved with community issues. Serving
on this board would give me the ability to exercise my skills by contributing to the needs of the
county.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I have served the people of the state of NC in an impartial, adjudicatory capacity, and now
defend the interests of a business. I am adept at considering all sides of any particular situation.

If a complaint involved one of my company s employees, I would need to recuse myself.

Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
I am an in-house attorney by trade. My mother recently retired as an NC public school teacher,
serving for 29 years. My father works in the business office of Surry Community College and has
been in that position since the 2000s. My uncle and aunt are both department chairs at an NC
community college. My uncle has been the past-president of the North Carolina Community
College Faculty Association.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
I understand the value of community college and vocational learning. I have taken a continuing
education course at DTCC and have been living in Durham/Orange County since 2021. 1 would
like to promote college education in the county in which we have put down roots.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I am under 30 and understand the desires of young students/young professionals.

Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
I am adept at negotiations, reviewing contracts, and performing legal research, as my day-to-day
job as an in-house attorney involves completing those tasks daily. My perspective as an attorney
would be valuable to this team.

I am a public transit user and use it as much as possible when I travel. I am particularly
interested in this topic, and believe that our county needs to be focused on transit as a priority
item.

continues to grow.

I have a long history in community organizing around equity and inclusive practices, including on
nonprofit boards (adult literacy, etc.). I also now have nearly 10 years as a business owner(my
studio is in Greensboro and my clients are nationwide with none based here in Orange County)
and recently completed my MBA.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
This is my preferred choice for becoming part of the local community in this way. As a member
of the LGBTQ+ community I appreciate Orange County s commitment to inclusive practices and
protections, and I would be interested in continuing to support equity for all our many Orange
County citizens and communities.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I believe I can bring unique experience to the board from both my professional and personal
history as well as demonstrated commitment to advocating for fair and responsible practices that
make sure all people in Orange County feel seen and heard.

I have my own history in areas like spoken word and poetry where I am published, but I am also
nearly in my 10th year running a brand communications company with a long history where I
have many design awards. I also have a long history in community organizing around equity and
inclusive practices, including on nonprofit boards (adult literacy, etc.).

I feel like I would be an asset to this board by having familiarity with institutional processes and
practices in arts granting and creative community support.

I think I bring many different experiences, ranging from literary to visual art experience as well as
a long history as a community advocacy and active LGBTQ+ community member.

I started the first Enviornmental Awareness Club at my high school in Richmond County in 1992,
well before anyone knew what a recycle bin was. I have always been a fierce advocate for the
protecting our planet.

I believe serving on this board will help me hone my skills to be a better partner with Earth and
help educate others to do the same.

domestic violence survivor and sought shelter here in Orange in 2011 with my son and never left.

Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I think that preserving and improving our parks and public spaces is critical work that benefits all
citizens. Making sure that such work is properly resourced, and that those resources are
equitably distributed across Orange County, is important for the health and welfare of the people
who live here, and is necessary to ensure that Orange County will continue to be an attractive
location for families and businesses.

I'm relatively new to Orange County, having moved to Chapel Hill from Durham in April 2022, so
I may have a bit of an outsiders perspective. Also, as an attorney, I may bring some expertise
that may not currently exist on the board.

drafting and implementing policies designed to increase diversity and cross-cultural

Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
Increasing cross-cultural awareness, equity, and diversity is perhaps the most important
responsibility of public bodies in today s world. Fostering collaborative and constructive dialogue
between diverse groups with differing agendas is difficult but crucial. I'd like the opportunity to
help do this work across Orange County.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
Diversity of viewpoints is critical in any public endeavor, and especially this one. While I identify
as a straight white male, I am constantly striving to better my understanding of the stories and
life experiences of those different from myself.

I am an attorney and I have exerience with administrative hearings in a number of settings.

As a member of the Animal Advisory Board, I think it is important to be involved in this process.

As an attorney, I am trained to review and analysis facts and evidence dispassionately and

I have worked with public health and safety for 27 years. I worked regularly with the Housing
and Community Relations Department, County/Town Attorneys, Building Inspections, Planners,
and manage staff in the Healthy Homes program.

This Board would give me an opportunity to use my large experience base and network to assist
with project development, policy, and evaluation that is geared toward diversity, equity, and
inclusion.

I work everyday with a diversity of viewpoints and must speak for the community client while
protecting public health. This is what I do.

At the age of 19 1 was appointed by Salisbury City Council to the City of Salisbury Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board where I served as a liaison between the department and the
managers office and City Council. I also recently completed an internship with the Parks,
Recreation, and Community Resources Department for the City of Raleigh where I gained a
great understanding of what frontline parks and recreation employees are doing to improve our
communities. I spent time with the Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services, the Learning
Development, the DEI, the Environmental Education, and the Downtown Maintenance
subdivision over the course of the summer.
I am currently a second year MPA student with a concentration in Local Government at UNC
Chapel Hill. Here I have learned about the structure of municipal government and have gained a
great understanding of how to interact with both elected officials and local government staff.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
I want to serve on this board because I think that parks and the ability to recreate are some of
the most important things that a community can offer to it s citizens. Orange County is a growing
community, and as people choose to move here, start business here, or build a family here we
want to make sure that we are not just building communities that people can live in but

communities that people can thrive and have a great quality of life in.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I am a young person, currently pursuing an MPA with a concentration in Local Government at
UNC-CH. With my background in serving on a Parks advisory board in my hometown along with
the frontline work I have done with the Raleigh Parks department, I have a great understanding
of both what residents and people my age are looking for in programming and facility offerings
as well as what staff are experiencing and what they need from the county for support.

My role in developing a Code of Ethics with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team at the
Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department highlights my commitment to
ethical standards and inclusivity, aligning with the HRC's mission to promote equal treatment and
personal dignity.
