1. Welcome- Rachel Bearman chaired the meeting. She welcomed everyone. The group
discussed the recent rise in COVID cases in North Carolina.
2. Introductions were made for attendance. Dan Leonard is visiting today as an interested
board applicant.
3. Approval of Minutes—August 13, 2024. Two corrections- Gregory misspelled. Dan's college
degrees corrected.
Director's Report
4. Staff updates
a. Aging Transitions/Volunteer Connect 55+Aging Specialist has been hired —Clayton
Foster. He could not start today because of COVID.
b. Volunteer Coordinator has been hired — Rebecca (Beck) Silber. They worked at Wake
County Parks & Rec previously.
c. Aging Transitions Social Worker has been posted. 9 applications have been received
so far.
d. Communications Manager position has been posted.
5. Direct Care Worker Awards— November 14. Nominations are open. See in EP on page 11.
6. Celebrating National Falls Prevention Month —Look on page 8 of Endless Possibilities for
details about the many events that are happening both at the Senior Centers and Community
Centers. All Aging Well Together Radio Show episodes in September are about Falls
Prevention.
7. National Ageism Awareness Day—October 9
8. All Ages All Stages Multi-Sector Plan on Aging Celebration—Sept. 27. All cabinets across state
are involved. Our Master Aging Plan is an example of Implementation for this plan. North
Carolina will be one of the best places to age with the plan's success.
8a. OC property taxes will be increasing. All Ages, All Stages can offer helpful services with this.
There are other local relief options, such as hardships or reevaluation.
9. Orange County Roadshow—Celebrating the Year of the Volunteer—Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. — 1
p.m. at the Eno Arts Mill.
10. Lots of events coming up at the Centers. Check new Endless Possibilities!
New Business
11. Continuing discussion on selecting a vice chair. Rachel was voted in as chair during last
meeting. Tracy volunteered and was voted in as vice chair.
12. Board Appointments- Sept. 27 is deadline for recommendations. The Aging Board is
recommending that Dan be appointed. Janice will follow up with Dr. Wilson.
13. One year anniversary of R Place— Update and Presentation—Alison Smith.
• Presentation Topics: Respite for All, Social Model of Care, Volunteer Model, The
Evolution of R Place, Neighbor Helping Neighbor, Cognitive Resilience, Daily Program
Template,Table Assignment Sample for congregate meals and activities, Social Time
highlights, Light exercise highlights, Cognitive Activity (crafts, games, community service,
community art) highlights, Movement Games, DJ Dance Party, Sing-a-long.
• OCDOA's R Place is the first secular program of this kind in the country. 2nd one just
launched. Winston Salem and New Bern want to start their own. The future goal is to
have this program in churches across Orange County. Cost efficient: $20-30 for us versus
$110+for the same programming. Plus, we have better friend to volunteer ratio.
• R Place flyers will be emailed to Board members.
• Jackie shared the 3-year PACT study at Duke to explore metrics for cognitive function.
• National Family Caregiver Fund is assisting with R Place. We have also received a
$10,000 private donation each year so far. Plus, initial $10,000 grant.
o Janice will host orientation for new board members to go over funding and other
administrative areas.
o Donations are accepted to our department and are considered a charitable gift
for tax purposes. The Friends of each center also help fund programs.

2022-27 Master Aging Plan
14. Workgroup meetings are happening over the next couple months. Workgroup invitations
should be in place, so lookout for meeting notices.
15. County's Strategic Plan and integration of MAP goals and performance measures.
16. Virtual Age-Friendly Ecosystem Summit—October 8, 9, 15, 16
Sponsored by George Washington University's Center for Health, Aging and Humanities.
Presentations representing NC:
• NC Division of Aging on the development of the NC Multi-sector Plan on Aging
• UNC Healthcare-Hillsborough Hospital will be presenting on being the first dementia
friendly hospital in NC. Presentation on the 16tn
• Alison Smith from the Orange County Department on Aging will be presenting on
OCDOA dementia friendly business training
17. Recommendation for October 8 board meeting— Participate together in the virtual Age-
Friendly Ecosystem Summit—"Shaping Tomorrow: Longevity, Age-Friendly and Multi-
sector Planning" session
18. Virtual AARP Annual Livability Conference— Designing for People of All Ages - October 15 -
16, 10 am— 12 noon on Oct 16. AARP annual livability conference on Oct 15 - 16 as well.
Janice shared the AARP Livable Community Conference flyer and additional info in packet
given out today.
• Dan asked if we are connected to Teepa Snow. Our AT team has been trained by her, as
well as Soltys Place staff next door. She has an office in Hillsborough and does a brain
cafe event. Some of our R Place Friends also go to her events.
• Janice shared Century Lives podcast-America's longevity is going down, but Spain and
Italy project life expectancy to be extended by 15 years by midcentury. Social isolation is
major factor. Another reason why senior centers are so important.
Committee Progress Reports if needed:
19. Senior Tar Heel Legislature— No report dur to Vibeke Talley's absence.
20. Nursing Home and Adult Care Home Joint Community Advisory Committee—Jackie Podger:
Reported the committee is doing well! Committee has 9 members. 3 are in the training
process. 2 more applications are outstanding.
• Jackie shared that Carolina Point has had 4 administrators in the last 6 months. Janice
shared that several years ago, we tried to bring together local LTC Administrators
together, but it was not specifically productive. We acknowledged as a group that out of
all our Aging services, we do not have good long term care options in Orange County.
• There is a new, family-owned facility called Our Promise Care off 15/501 towards
Chatham County. It has occupancy for 5 individuals and has high standard of care.
Committee is working to get PT to one isolated person at this home.
21. Friends of the Passmore Center- no representation present.
22. Friends of the Seymour Center—Sheila Evans-Janice shared on behalf of Sheila: Continuing
to work on bylaws and work on 90's Tea program, as well as forming committees for cookbook
project and travel group.
Adjournment- Rachel formally adjourned the meeting. Janice shared pics of our upcoming Fit
Lot that will be on grounds of the Seymour center.
