THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MET ON MONDAY: July 22, 2024 at Hillsborough

BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS PRESENT: Jane Garrett, Ann Wilkerson, Sally Greene, Oscar
Fleming, and Chris Barnes
GUEST: None.
BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS ABSENT: None.
STAFF PRESENT: Nancy Coston, Social Services Director; Lindsey Shewmaker, Human Services Manager;
and Crystal Mitchell, Human Services Manager.
I. Call to Order and Introductions
DSS Vice-Chair, Oscar Fleming, called the meeting to order at 4:07 pm.
II. Board Comments
None.
III. Public Comments
None.
IV. Agenda Changes
None.
V. Action Items
On a motion by Chris Barnes, the Board approved the minutes of June 17, 2024. Jane Garrett
seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent.
VI. Items for Discussion and/or Decision
1. Executive Session
Chris Barnes moved the Board enter Executive Session pursuant to § 143 318.11(a)(1) referencing
§ 7B 2901. Jane Garrett seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent.
Ann Wilkerson moved the Board enter Executive Session pursuant to § 143 318.11(a)(6). Chris
Barnes seconded the motion. The motion was carries without dissent.
After returning to regular session the Social Services Board accepted the retirement and resignation
of Director, Nancy Coston, effective October 31, 2024.
2. Director’s Report
There are currently 21 vacancies.

Chris Barnes moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:43 pm. Sally Greene seconded the motion. The motion was
carried without dissent.
