BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS PRESENT: Jane Garrett, Ann Wilkerson, and Chris Barnes GUEST: None. BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS ABSENT: Oscar Fleming and Sally Green. STAFF PRESENT: Nancy Coston, Social Services Director; Lindsey Shewmaker, Human Services Manager; Crystal Mitchell, Human Services Manager; Rebekah Rapoza, Budget Officer; and Sharron Hinton, Human Services Manager I. Call to Order and Introductions DSS Chair, Jane Garrett, called the meeting to order at 4:04 pm. II. Board Comments None. III. Public Comments None. IV. Agenda Changes None. V. Action Items On a motion by Ann Wilkerson, the Board approved the minutes of March 18, 2024. Chris Barnes seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent. VI. Items for Discussion and/or Decision 1. Quarterly Data Dashboard Lindsey Shewmaker presented third quarter data for FY2023-24. 2. Medicaid Expansion Update Lindsey Shewmaker gave an update on expanded Medicaid. There are currently 3,253 Orange County residents who have enrolled in the new Medicaid program since December 1, 2023. Staff have done an excellent job managing the enrollment and processing applications. They are currently working on outreach and education efforts to identify and enroll potentially eligible Orange County residents. 3. Foster Home Recruitment Plan MINUTES ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES April 15, 2024 2 Crystal Mitchell presented on the recruitment plan to increase the number of foster parents available to Orange County DSS for children in custody. Foster Art Exhibition will be April 26th in Carrboro. Foster Parent Appreciation will be held on May 10th in the evening. The location will be determined. 4. Director’s Report The two WIOA grants have been renewed for another year. There is a Job Fair scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th at Orange Works. There are currently 39 employers scheduled to attend the event. May 10th from 10a-2p is the Be Well Event in the parking lot at Social Services. Sally Green read the prevent child abuse month proclamation. April 27th is the community meeting on the use of Opiod Settlement Funds. There are two staff retirements to note. Amy Mitchell retired after 23 years of service to Orange County and Cathy Hill will retire in May after 25 years of service. VII. Announcements Chris Barnes moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:12 pm.
