PURPOSE: To approve a proclamation designating the week of September 16-20, 2024 as Adult
Education and Family Literacy Week in Orange County and commending Orange Literacy for its
40 years of dedicated service to the community.
BACKGROUND: The week of September 16-20, 2024 is considered Adult Education and Family
Literacy Week by several organizations on a national level. In addition, Orange Literacy is
celebrating its 40th anniversary this year promoting literacy, and has positively impacted the lives
of thousands of adults and families in the Orange County community.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this proclamation.
ALIGNMENT WITH STRATEGIC PLAN: This item supports:
• GOAL 2: HEALTHY COMMUNITY
OBJECTIVE 7. Invest in services and programs that improve the health and quality of life
of the community (e.g., recreation and public open spaces, arts, etc.)
• GOAL 5: PUBLIC EDUCATION/LEARNING COMMUNITY
OBJECTIVE 1. Foster collaborative relationships with formal and informal educational
organizations and agencies to provide opportunities for community members to meet,
connect, and learn together.
OBJECTIVE 3. Provide support for workforce development through training, tools,
technology, and other resources.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve and authorize the
Chair to sign the proclamation designating the week of September 16-20, 2024 as Adult Education
and Family Literacy Week in Orange County, and commending Orange Literacy for its 40 years
of dedicated service to the community.

Adult Education and Family Literacy Week — September 16-20, 2024
and
Orange Literacy 40' Anniversary
Whereas, literacy is a fundamental skill that empowers individuals and strengthens
communities; and
Whereas, adult education and family literacy programs provide essential education and
support to adults and families, enabling them to achieve personal and professional goals;
and
Whereas, Orange Literacy, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has dedicated four
decades to promoting literacy and has positively impacted the lives of thousands of adults
and families; and
Whereas, the commitment and efforts of Orange Literacy in providing educational
opportunities and fostering a love for reading and learning are commendable and deserve
recognition; and
Whereas, Adult Education and Family Literacy Week serves as a reminder of the
importance of literacy and the need to support literacy programs in our community; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper to recognize the achievements and contributions of
Orange Literacy and to encourage continued support for literacy initiatives;
Now, Therefore, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim
the week of September 16-20, 2024, as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in
Orange County, and commend Orange Literacy for its 40 years of dedicated service to
our community.
