BACKGROUND: The Arts Commission recommends strategies to promote the artistic and cultural growth of Orange County, advises the Board of Commissioners on matters involving the arts, and acts as the granting panel for funding programs available to individual artists and non- profit groups sponsoring arts projects in Orange County. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all fifteen (15) At-Large members. Tryon St. Hillsborough, NC 27278 Dear Laura: The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) Advisory Board unanimously approved the recommendation of Renee Hayes at their meeting on Monday,June 10, 2024. Renee has recently moved to the region from Berkley, CA,where she was involved on the board of Freight & Salvage, a performing arts organization. She is a vocalist and performer and brings with her valuable perspective and experience from being involved in a community-based nonprofit arts organization, not unlike the Eno Arts Mill, but in a much larger region of the country. We have been hoping for a long while that Renee would consider applying her talents to our organization and are thrilled to have her involved. Boards/Commissions applied for: Arts Commission Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board I have worked as an arts funder for almost 30 years and recently retired from my 23 year position as Associate Director for San Francisco Grants for the Arts, where I helped distribute approximately,$9M-$16M annually(depending on the budget)to over 200 SF arts organizations. While serving in that position I founded the Cultural Capacity Fund, to assist individual arts administrators develop skills that would improve the stability and vibrancy of their organizations. I also served as a volunteer on both the Oakland and Berkeley Arts Councils and was awarded a year-long fellowship at the San Francisco Foundation. In my free time I sang with the a cappella group The Irrationals for 18 years and recorded three albums. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I am grateful for the opportunities I was afforded and believe it is important to give back by contributing my skills and time to my community. I am from a long line of New Jersey based family who believed that community service was an obligation and blessing. Most importantly, I love the arts and believe my mission is to experience and support creativity. I also have a long history in community organizing around equity and inclusive practices, including on nonprofit boards (adult literacy, etc.). Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I feel like I would be an asset to this board by having familiarity with institutional processes and practices in arts granting and creative community support.
