HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda - 04-20-2004-6cORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT Meeting Date: April 20, 2004 Action Agenda Item No. _ SUBJECT: Orange County Senior Games DEPARTMENT: County Manager, Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No ATTACHMENT(S): Proclamation INFORMATION CONTACT: Karen Berry, 918-7372 Carrboro Recreation & Parks TELEPHONE NUMBERS: Carrboro: 918-7372 PURPOSE: To proclaim the weeks of May 3 through May 27, 2004 as Orange County Senior Games Events Days and to encourage citizens age ,56 and aver to participate, BACKGROUND: The first Orange County Senior Games were held in May 1988 with 69 participants in athletic events ranging from softball throw to tennis, In 2003, 168 seniors competed in various events. The resulting participation number was 696, The event categories offered will grow from 15 in 2003 to 19 in 2004, The event categories represent an actual 69 events offered to men, women, doubles and mixed doubles in 9 different age groups, The season will conclude with an awards ceremony and dinner, attended by athletes, friends and family. The benefits to the participants and to the volunteers are great. Many seniors get involved for the sheer fun and fellowship that the games offer. Others use the competitions as motivators for daily training, The games strengthen confidence as well as muscles. Many qualify to progress to the state and national senior games, FINANCIAL IMPACT: The financial impact is already addressed by the county budget in the allocated funds for designated staff of the Department on Aging and Recreation and Parks Department who work with this program, Carrboro Recreation and Parks and Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation additionally absorb a portion of the games in their budget for designated staff, RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board of County Commissioners approve the proclamation and declare May 3 through 27 2004 as Orange County Senior Games Events Days, ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PROCLAMATION Orange County Senior Games Whereas, According to recent population figures, there are more than 18,734 persons over 55 years of age in Orange County; and, Whereas, Orange County is concerned about the health, fitness, and social well-being of its mature adult population; and, Whereas, Orange County Senior Games provides a special opportunity for mature adults to grow positively in the areas of health, fitness and social well-being; and, Whereas, Orange County would like to encourage local businesses and resident support and participation from county residents age 55 and older; NOW, BE IT THEREFORE PROCLAIMED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners declares May 3-27, 2004 as ORANGE COUNTY SENIOR GAMES EVENT DAYS AND ENCOURAGES CITIZENS AGE 55 AND OVER TO PARTICII'ATE, This, the 20`h day of April, 2004.
