INFORMATION CONTACT:
PURPOSE: To provide notice of adjustment in salary for the Sheriff and Register of Deeds
positions.
BACKGROUND: As authorized by the North Carolina General Statutes 153A-92 and the
Orange County Personnel Ordinance, the Board of Commissioners may adjust salaries,
allowances and other compensation for the Sheriff and Register of Deeds positions, The Board
of Commissioners must give notice of intention and adjustment no later than 14 days before the
last date for filing notice of candidacy for the office, That date is February 28, 2006 by 12 noon.
Attached is a draft resolution with the proposed notice of adjustment in salary for the above
elected officials. Following the election and after the successful candidate takes office, the
Commissioners retain the right to adjust the minimum starting salary upward in accordance with
the related experience held by the successful candidate,
The proposed starting salary for the Sheriffs position is the minimum of Salary Grade 31 of the
Orange County Classification and Pay Plan, The current minimum of Salary Grade 31 is
$73,947,
The proposed starting salary for the Register of Deed's position is the minimum of Salary Grade
29 of the Orange County Classification and Pay Plan, The current minimum of Salary Grade 29
is $66,992,
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the attached
Resolution.

Resolution Giving Notice to All Candidates For The
Register of Deeds and Sheriff Positions in Orange County
The Orange County Board of Commissioners, as authorized by North Carolina General Statutes
153A-92, has set the starting salaries for the Sheriff and Register of Deeds positions as
provided below. This will affect the individuals elected to these offices when they take office,
All other compensation elements including expense allowances are as set forth in the Orange
County Personnel Ordinance,
The starting salary for the Sheriffs position will be the minimum of Salary Grade 31 of the
Orange County Classification and Pay Plan, The minimum of Salary Grade 31 is $73,947.
The starting salary for the Register of Deed's position will be the minimum of Salary Grade
29 of the Orange County Classification and Pay Plan, The minimum of Salary Grade 29 is
$66,992.
This Resolution will nat be altered or amended until after the persons elected Sheriff and
Register of Deeds in the 2006 election for those positions take office, Thereafter, the Board of
Commissioners may adjust the starting salary of the candidate elected considering the years of
service and performance in related experience of the person elected.
