Animal Services Advisory Board
Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
I am a long time animal lover and have been a vegetarian for 12 years. I have 2 rescue dogs of
my own and also volunteer with a fostering program that benefits a rural NC shelter. Animal
advocacy is important to me and I feel strongly about getting more involved to learn about other
ways I can support a cause close to my heart. I received my B.A. in Psychology from UNC-
Chapel Hill in 2016 and my Master s of Education in School Counseling 2017. 1 currently work
as a school counselor in a low-income school, a job requiring advocacy, compassion, and
teamwork on a daily basis.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
During the COVID pandemic, I used my quarantine time to connect more with nature and my
environment. I went for daily walks in county parks and seeing baby deer, frogs, dogs, birds,
and other beautiful natural creates would always make my day. I took on fostering 3 4 week old
puppies (giving me a total of 5 dogs in my house!) and absolutely loved it, despite the hard
work. Seeing them find homes and grow up happy and healthy after their tough start to life gave
me a new appreciation for animal advocacy. I know there is more I can do to help the animals

we share our neighborhood with and I m willing to donate the time and energy necessary to
represent their needs on a policy level.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I have experience living in the mid-west and North Carolina in both rural and urban
environments. I grew up in a religiously-blended household, so I m very comfortable being
around a diverse array of viewpoints. I completed Cultural Competency Training through the
American School Counselor Association, making me a certified cultural competency specialist.
The school I work at is very diverse in terms of employees and student body, which I have a
great appreciation for and sought out when looking for jobs.
Do you have any personal or business interest(s)that could create a conflict of interest
(either real or perceived) if you are appointed to this board?

I'm an attorney with 20+ years experience in public education, including the past 10 as an
attorney with the UNC System. I've represented public boards and participated on numerous
committees working on public policy and administrative projects.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I think that preserving and improving our parks and public spaces is critical work that benefits all
citizens. Making sure that such work is properly resourced, and that those resources are
equitably distributed across Orange County, is important for the health and welfare of the people
who live here, and is necessary to ensure that Orange County will continue to be an attractive
location for families and businesses.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I'm relatively new to Orange County, having moved to Chapel Hill from Durham in April 2022, so

Diversity of viewpoints is critical in any public endeavor, and especially this one. While I identify
