BACKGROUND: The Arts Commission recommends strategies to promote the artistic and cultural growth of Orange County, advises the Board of Commissioners on matters involving the arts, and acts as the granting panel for funding programs available to individual artists and non- profit groups sponsoring arts projects in Orange County. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all fifteen (15) At-Large members. Tryon St. Hillsborough, NC 27278 Dear Laura: The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) Advisory Board unanimously approved the recommendation of Celia Gibbs as the FY25 UNC-Chapel Hill Student Liaison at their meeting on May 13 2024. Celia is a rising senior at UNC-Chapel Hill and is involved in the visual and literary arts. She will be our 6th student liaison and will continue to offer invaluable input from the arts community of the campus. We are currently working to fill our remaining vacant position with either a local teacher or artist of color, to both ensure leadership that is reflective of our community and be in compliance with the NC Arts Council as the Designated County Partner (DCP) for Orange County.As the DCP, we are required to have a minimum of 33% people of color on our board. It saturates the mountains, serving as a potent means of connection and storytelling. Growing up surrounded by these narratives fueled my own passion for writing, leading me to pursue it at UNC. Now, as an English major specializing in mixed-genre creative writing and minoring in Writing for the Screen and Stage program, alongside studio art, I remain deeply connected to the campus arts community. Much of my time is spent engaging with various artistic events, drawing continued inspiration from the vibrant creative atmosphere. Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board I am eager to contribute to the board as a means to connect student life at UNC with the broader community. Witnessing the incredible talent and creativity of my peers and faculty continuously inspires me. Serving on the board would provide me with valuable experience as I prepare for life after graduation, and I would be deeply grateful for the opportunity. How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
