I. Call to Order: 6:01
11. New Member Updates
a. McLendon
i. Came to complete term for someone else. She's a renter, and only can afford to
rent because she rents from her daughter. Has lived in two low-income housing
areas in. Home is a place of rest—when you know your neighbors, know
someone will help take care of you. Looking forward to "winning the lottery so I
can retire."
b. Adams
i. Moved to Hboro March 2020, right before the pandemic.Trying to get more
involved, meet people, etc. Has done a lot of affordable housing work through
Habitat. Worked through FHFI in other countries. Also works for national
nonprofit (LISK), but doesn't get to do any work locally. Wasn't able to find an
affordable home to buy so is building(also not affordable). Home is a place of
rest, where children and grandchildren can come home.
ii. Amazon committing funds to affordable housing in DC, Nashville, Seattle.
c. Arlyn
i. Wants to use work skills for his community.Spent a lot of time in Louisiana
working on their housing challenges. Works in disaster recovery(hurricane
Matthew and Florence). Wants to expand opportunities for both renters and
homeowners. Looking at expanding access in more rural parts of the community
that sometimes get overlooked.Wants to make sure housing is safe and decent
and good for them, not just the cheapest thing that can be built. Expecting first
child, which has changed definition of"home." Looking forward to beautiful
weather, meeting neighbors.

d. Meschko
i. Moved here from Ohio, lived with son for 14 months, moved to Hillsborough in
an affordable housing apt for seniors. Hope for the future is that there are more
options for affordable housing. Many people in her neighborhood can't even
afford groceries. Home means "comfort." Looking forward to dogwoods,
magnolias, and other plants.
e. Voss
i. Lives in Efland/Mebane. Brought to board by desire to get involved with where
he lives. There was a compelling need to do that. Retired so has some time to
do that. Professional lifelong interest in housing. Hope for future is more money
for affordable housing. Particular interest in alternatives to the buy/own/rent
dichotomy(Cooperative Housing). Lives in shared home with 5 people so
"home" means adventure every day. Looking for a slow arrival of summer.
f. Nilssen
i. Applied for board in July. Moved from Florida. Background is in corporal
finance/real estate. Did volunteer work in green building, human rights,
advocacy. As realtor, she saw that people who served the area couldn't afford
to live in the area. Starting nonprofit for workforce housing. Wants to help 80%-
120%AMI folks buy homes through financing, ADUs, etc. Also does home rehab.
Wants anyone who wants to rent or buy to be able to do so, and that they can
stay there in dignity. Would like the word "affordable" to go away. "Home"
means a place where you feel welcomed, you have neighbors that have your
back, bonding. Looking forward to Spring in general; Florida doesn't have that

i. Wants to work on affordable housing issues. Hopes that this area WILL become
more affordable. "Home" is your refuge, a safe and comfortable area. Looking
forward to a couple bucket-list golf trips.
h. Sykes
i. Been on board almost 6 years. Doesn't work for nonprofit, works for
corporation. Not what she studied; she studied policy around land use/social
policy. Doesn't get to do that work in her 9-5 so does it through volunteering.
Finds hope in the fact that there is actually discussion around affordable
housing. Hope is that this momentum continues. Stable housing is the
foundation. Looking forward to blooms and blossoms but not looking forward to
pollen.
i. Corey
i. Odd career that started in TV production. Learned that she really likes public
service, and learned a lot about state govt from that job. Came to OC working in
the Partnership to End Homelessness. Started this job two years ago. Loves
working in community with folks like us. Hopes that there will be enough
affordable housing. "Home" is a place where you can do what you want and
make your own rules. Looking forward to kids' activities this Spring.
j. Cormack
i. Studied theater but experienced so much racism that she decided to pursue
social justice. Ended up in England to pursue masters and worked in housing
association there. Saw what can happen when there is a more socialized way of
doing housing, which is what brought her into this job. "Place-shaping"--people
shaping their neighborhoods and loving where they live--affects health,
happiness, everything. Passionate about people being able to age in place.

"Home" is about the people. Looking forward to friend coming to visit from
England.
k. Hernandez
i. What brought her to board is that a lot of boards lack Latinx community
members. Affordable housing is a big issue for this community. Hope for future
is that there is more affordable housing. What IS available is not available to a
lot of her community members.A lot of the Latinx community is moving to
outside counties even though they work in OC.A lot of their income is spent on
commuting. "Home" means stability. Lived in many different places throughout
her childhood. Finally felt at home when her parents purchased a mobile home.
Looking forward to going to Canada.
I. Towell
i. Noticed an uptick in social media posts from people who couldn't find housing,
period, affordable or not. Hope is to see more options—not just for single
people, but also for families and senior citizens. "Home" is wherever you lay
your hat. Graduating in Spring with Masters.

a. May at Hargraves. Mae asks if we can do it in Northern Orange County at Cedar Grove.
Found the one at RENA to be very informative. Printouts were really helpful last time.
Can we invite the groups that are being funded (Habitat, etc.)?Won't be mandatory.
That way if community members have questions, there will be someone there to answer
questions. Conception in Northern OC is that we have Habitat and nothing else but that
isn't necessarily true. Can we have refreshments?Water and lemonade. We don't need
a whole meal.
i. Confirmed: Cedar Grove in May.
b. Should we do orientation presentation in April? Consensus is yes. That will be in
addition to the individual meetings. That would be an opportunity for new members to
ask questions about the board. What's the best way to send out information, etc?
i. ACTION:Add Orientation to April agenda
