PURPOSE: To discuss appointments to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (ABC Board) and
to discuss designating a member as ABC Board Chair.
BACKGROUND: The ABC Board has the authority to buy, sell, transport and possess alcoholic
beverages for the operation of its stores. This Board also adopts rules for the ABC system and
has the authority to hire and dismiss employees.
The Board of County Commissioners appoints all five (5) At-Large members.

I have experience on other boards, but this one actually fits better with my 9 to 5. 1 work in
analytics and have handled supply chain, customer service, and compliance for regulations in
that and feel it would be similar to what the ABC Board would review.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
The ABC Board also helps with economic development for the restaurants in town, and one
thing I have interest in is helping to promote economic development.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
As a consumer and someone who cares about expanding the revenue sources for the county, I
think I would bring a different view than others to this board.

I am familiar with how the process works in Hillsborough and can bring that to the other parts of
the county.

My work on various advisory boards has focused on how policy can be used to create greater
equity in the county, from development processes to working on partnerships for reducing costs
to residents. I know the HRC has a larger platform to help encourage

want to help them ensure their voice is heard. Orange County doesn t do the best job of
encouraging people who might be in housing trouble to come forward, and

I am a North Carolina native, growing up in Columbus County, and have been a resident of
Orange County since 1993, my freshman year at UNC. While an undergrad here, I worked in
several bars and restaurants in Chapel Hill, both cooking and bartending, prior to working at
UNC for several years, first in finance administration and then university development. In 2010, 1
returned to UNC to attend law school, and I have been a practicing attorney in Chapel Hill since
graduating from law school and passing the bar exam in 2013. In that capacity, I have
represented clients with alcohol infractions as well as advised small businesses on alcohol
regulations. I ve also been a customer lawfully for 22 years now.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
As a longtime resident, homeowner, and parent in this community, I have a vested interest in its
governance. I also feel somewhat connected to the local food and spirits scene, having worked
in restaurants years ago and having more recently represented and consulted with restaurant
owners. I have followed closely the lobbying efforts of local icons Scott Maitland and Gary
Crunkleton and have a great appreciation for the level of engagement within our community.
Additionally, for the last several years, I have enjoyed my experience serving with the Chapel Hill

Public Library Board, and I look forward to becoming more active in additional capacities in the

I am very eager to serve this community of Orange County. I really like it here, and I want to do
my part to keep it great! I have applied to several boards whenever they become available.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I am an ABC customer maybe once per month, so I think I can bring a perspective of many
people like me.

I studied history in college (UNC Charlotte, 2008 & 2012), and I have been a passionate history
learner my entire life.

I think learning history is incredibly important for society. Not knowing about what happened
before you is to always remain a child. (Cicero, I think). I think it s important to understand the
context of history and many perspectives in the world to appreciate your own place in society.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
Lately, I ve been focused on learning local history, specifically about the first peoples, from Paleo-
Indians to the modern day descendants of local tribes. It s a challenge because so much of their
history is unwritten and so many of the people were lost to disease and oppression.

(either real or perceived) if you are appointed to this board?

Please explain how your background, education and experience is relevant to this board
We recently purchased a 2-acre property in Orange County, and I ve been learning a lot about
stewardship of the land, both from an environmental perspective as well as an aesthetic one. I
was really excited about the new Blackwood Farm Park, and I love the new architecture there. I
also participated in the OC bee group that took care of the bees there.

I want to help create more experiences and spaces for people to learn about and appreciate our
environment.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I like to think in really practical terms about how what the government does benefits the people it
serves. I want to ask how does it serve the people of Orange County?

Chamber(also name Business Person of the Year), Member of Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber,

articulate the wants and needs of many undeserved/underrepresented members of our great

I have lived and/or visited 24 countries. These experiences, along with my experience working in
both the military and private sectors have given me a very unique understanding on the beautiful
diversity of culture and experience in this world. Combine that with my ancestry being in the
Orange/Alamance/Guilford area since the 1740s and I feel like I bring a very unique perspective
that I hope to use to serve Orange citizens and county commissioners as a board member.

Orange county is still pretty rural and I grew up very rural in the western part of the state. I also

Hopefully I can use my background and experience to assist the the board in its mission. I am
happy to help/assist in whatever role is needed.

Both of my parents grew up on farms and I grew up on a farm in the western part of this state.
Without personally knowing most of the board, I cannot be sure what diversity or viewpoints, I
