BACKGROUND: Three members of this 12-member board, whose first terms expired at the
end of March 2004, are seeking, and are eligible for, reappointment.

WORK EXPERIENCE: Currently 1 am working with. Melany Earnhardt Breen an attorne
with the Environmental Poverty Law Program (Hillsborough, NC) to obtain funding for a
full-time attorney position. As this attomey, my responsibilities would include
community education and outreach on environmental issues to low-income residents in
North Carolina; coordinating various projects, including the lead poisoning prevention
project; and providing direct legal representation and assistance to legal services clients
on environmental issues. In the past, l have worked with the Southern Environmental
Law Center (Chapel Hill) and the Environmental Law Communi Clinic (Berkelev.
Califomial. In addition, while at the University of North Carolina School of Law, I worked
in the Civil Legal Assistance Clinic,.where I provided re resentation to low-income
residents of North Carolina on various civil Issues.
VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: In the past I have worked most recently with the Chapel Hill
office of the Southern Environmental Law Center, anon-profit organization working on
environmental issues throughout the south. In particular I. worked on public trust and
hog farming Issues. 1 have also worked with the Environmental Law Communi
Program in Hillsborough, N.C., an organization dedicated to assisting low-income
individuals and communities with environmental issues. I have volunteered with various
environmental organizations, including the Student Environmental Action Coalition,
Environmental Defense Fund and the Conservation Council for North Carolina. I am
currently working with a group of concerned citizens from throughout North Carolina to
pass environmental justice legislation in the North Carolina General Assembly.
EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE:1 graduated from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in interdiscipiinarvStudles in Environmental
Policy. I recently graduated from UNC's School of Law in May, where 1 had the
opportunity to take courses in general environmental law issues, ocean and coastal law
and land use law. In particular, I completed a course taught by David Owens a,professor
at the Institute of Governmentx who specializes in land use.planning issues. In this
course, we covered various planning issues, Including zoning nonconformities
variances and the legality of local governing. boards and board of adjustment decisions.
