BACKGROUND: The Arts Commission recommends strategies to promote the artistic and cultural growth of Orange County, advises the Board of Commissioners on matters involving the arts, and acts as the granting panel for funding programs available to individual artists and non- profit groups sponsoring arts projects in Orange County. The Board of County Commissioners appoints all fifteen (15) At-Large members. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board discuss appointments to the Arts Commission. 3 ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION February 27, 2024 Laura Jensen Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners 300 W. Tryon St. Hillsborough, NC 27278 Dear Laura: The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) Advisory Board has unanimously approved the recommendation of Heather Washburn to Position #7, expiring March 31, 2027. Our board aims to have voices from key local arts groups represented.Anita Mills has served as the liaison to the Orange County Artists Guild (OCAG) for the past six years but will be rotating off the board in March. Heather is on the OCAG board and will serve as our new liaison. In addition to her role as a visual artist, she is also the coordinator of the twice-annual Calico Makers Market in Carrboro and is connected with many local artists and makers in the community. On behalf of the OCAC Advisory Board,we greatly appreciate the commissioners' consideration of this appointment. Three board members first terms end March 31. John Bemis (position #2), Crystal Wu (position #8), and Lindsay Metivier (position #5) will be serving a second term.Additionally, Crystal Wu will be serving as Chair when Antia Mills'term ends March 31. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I would like to help make sure art is not forgotten or over looked and that artists in all phased of their practice, receive the support and resources they need to express their vision, ideas, and passions. Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board: With my 30+ years in art, my experience is not rooted in a single discipline or belief. Instead, I think of viewpoint as a stew with ingredients born from the five states I have worked in, the three countries I have lived in, the eight colleges/universities I studied at, and the seven colleges/universities I have taught at.
